| I have a safe, but I leave right next to the ocean. What is the ideal humidity to prevent rust but not crack my wood stocks? I live in south texas so we have heat and humidity. |
| Think Goldenrod. Humidity should be 55-50 or less but I believe less than 40% is rough on wood stocks. Ideally 75F/50% RH is what you want. But the bigger key is keeping the temperature inside the safe warmer than the outside and circulating. Hence the golden rod. |
| I live by the ocean and use the goldenrod as well as the Evedry mini dehumidifier: http://www.eva-dry.com/products/eva-dry-1100-petite-dehumidifier/ |

Silica Gel - color change indicates when saturated - bake in the oven to refresh.
You can buy bulk cheaply and make your own containers - or you can buy pre packaged. All the sites above are good (plus Amazon) - here's a safe-sized pre-packed example |

Quoted:
You could always run a cat 5 cable in your safe with you electric and run a nas in there. The drive will work like a golden rod and keep your humidity down, plus you will have your computer backup online and in aside your safe. Win-win I was thinking about doing the same thing with my NAS when I get a sturdy. I was thinking in regards to security of data though and never thought of it as a way to reduce humidity. |

Quoted: Keep the humidity around 40-50%. My local Dollar Tree sells these for $1/each. I just change them out every couple of months. DampRid is another "premium" brand. They're all made in China. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5188trBI1yL.jpg DampRid is packaged in Memphis, TN by W.M. Barr. I keep their forklifts working. The manger told me the bigest problem they had early on was figuring out how to package it without destorying the packaging equipment. Don't know where the product itself is made. I'll find out Monday. |

People talk on here about low humidity being bad for wood, but I can't believe you could get it low enough to worry about.
I'ld like to hear from folks who live in Arizona, Utah etc. where there is no humidity and hear if they have problems with wood stocks. My vote is get it as low as you can. I use the Eva-Dry products (dessicatn plus the mini electric dehumidifier) and a goldenrod. I oil all my metal before I put anything away (I usually rub stocks down with an oily rag/patch). My safe is 6 blocks from the ocean in Florida (SUPER humid in the summer) in a non-climate controlled building. If yours is inside an airconditioned house, that would make humidity much less a concern, but I'd still use something.... |
