I've had this GunVault handgun safe for 3 years now that I've never used.  The model is the NV 200 with a set of keys.  I was going to throw it away but decided to attempt to break it open for my own education and entertainment.  For the price they are selling these, I'd say they are just about right.  It took less than a minute to defeat without a break in sweat.  My next use for this is shooting it with my high power air rifles to see if they penetrate.

Looks like the latch was super glued to the safe.

The latch is still attached to the locking mechanism.

"Vault" seems to be quite the misnomer.

That is definately a child safety device instead of buglary protection.

Yeah, if your child can't operate a screwdriver... haha

Did you try to cut the cable with a pair of dykes or a serrated edge knife? I always thought that would be easier and just take the whole thing.

I can't find the cable it came with since I've had this for 3 years.  But the way it works is that is that it wraps around the latch.  Since I found out that it was easy to snap it off, I'm sure that it would've been no problem pulling it off if properly used.  I don't think cutting the steel cable would've been faster than prying it open.  It did not take much at all.

I use those when I travel by air. Meets airline restrictions and is fine with me.

Their stuff is junk.  I have a bigger one that I can open by hitting 2-3 times with a hammer.

Who makes a good handgun safe? Only model that I can find that looks adequate on the internet is Fort Knox.

Thanks,

Thats it. The down side is that simplex locks are pretty easy to figure out with time.

I would go with a mechanical push button style lock. These handgun safes are usually constructed with heavier steel. The V-Line is still fairly light, but can be mounted in a drawer. The Fort Knox is heavier with a 10GA body and a 7GA door. The FAS1 Safe is the heaviest with 7GA all around and has some unique features in the way it holsters and presents your gun to you.
