I researched lining the interior of my TL safe here and found the suggestion of using head-liner material.
To me that wasn't durable enough so I started looking around. What I ended up with is a thin carpet sold at Home-depot sold on their roller rack. Carpet is too thin for anything but lining a safe. Perfect, tough, flexible, and the right color; Grey. A 32" by 8 (?) foot section was $15. A $7 can of spray adhesive, at $10 a 60" aluminum straight edge ruler, and off to the races. I cut the carpet with 1/8" gap at the edges to allow wiggle room but suppose I could have made it slightly oversize and final cut once applied inside. One large back wall piece and three thinner side walls on each side around and between the shelf rails. I extended the pieces closet to the door opening out to the bolt pockets to protect the finish of the rifles if I bang against the side them while putting in them in. For the floor I even took out the lower pocket, took carpet past it 90 degrees over the lower lip and stopped at the next bend. Only needed adhesive at the bend and a little way towards the back. The extra carpet takes up some of the play (gap) when the door is closed. Cut out the hole for the plastic bolt pocket and reinstalled. Really looks killer ! Had enough to cover one metal shelf and once again went over the 90 degree lip for a more finished look. Used double sided tape on the lower shelf surface to attach a 20 x 30" roll of rifle rod velcro sheet. The safe came with a separate locked upper compartment so there is only room for the one shelf. Going to use some rifle rod pistol hangers on the shelf. Shelf just clears a scoped AMAC .50 BMG reciever/barrel assembly w/muzzle down. This was the biggest safe that would fit and took 3 guys a day to install. Even so there is never enough room. Might should have gone with a "gun safe" for the extra room and less PITA install. Good news is that I will sleep like a baby even if I'm gone for an extended vacation. This thing is going to stay with the home if we move. I just have to laugh when my friends see this behemoth for the first time. |
