Moving into a larger apartment and this time its on the first floor with an attached garage.

Been looking for awhile and can't seem to find much information what I am looking for on the forums.

Does anybody have experience with a wireless network camera system that would be good for an apartment

I need no more than 5 cameras running to a DVR system

There is no need for them to be rugged or weather proof since they will all be indoors.

Currently looking at 4 camera Lorex system

any input is good input thanks guys

I run a two Lorex camera system in my condo.  I do not run it to a DVR however.  They work great for my purposes, but does get washed out on very brights days sometimes, and on overcast days sometimes can't make up its mind and seems to hover between IR and regular mode.

Mine are the wired versions instead of wireless, so something to keep in mind that even though they are "wireless" it will require a plug in to the power source (unless you are hardwiring them).

My system was very affordable, and everyone who see's it wants one.  Definitely recommend them!

Pysoft has some very configurable software for cameras. You can use IP, wireless IP or USB cameras. Check into it.

I got it fully usable, but with splash screens that go away when you buy the package.

You came to the right place.

Hope you've got some time... the thread is 50 pages, and literally chock-full of info:  Link

Been there done that nothing in that thread addresses anything in my budget or what I'm looking for in general

Still have it bookmarked for when I no longer live in an apartment

Check out cameras which use 'power over ethernet'. One cat 5 cable does it all, including power the camera.

They're expensive...probably won't jive w/ OP's budget. That thread Gray Man pointed out was all I needed to get some awesome coverage going at my place.

That's why I suggested the Pysoft software. You can use an old laptop, desktop, whatever... load up the s/w on it, plug some eBay cameras into it, and it'll become your home security server!

I run a 4 camera setup by Defender, with DVR, remote viewing, night vision, etc....

I love it.  Can record at max resolution on two cameras 24/7, 30fps on each for weeks before its full, and then it just over-writes the oldest data.

Has configurable web server, etc....

Newegg has this one, its probably the most bang for your buck:

My defender system was about $100 more but I'm happy with it.  Does NOT wash out in daylight, has VERY good night vision performance.

You can get a 500G DVR with 4 Sony Super HAD night vision cameras for $350 on Amazon.  I am very pleased with it. Resolution is better than I ever expected.  All the huge camera thread did for me is add confusion and made me put off the project.  I should have done this years ago.

I plan to buy a second system for redundancy.

Ummm... sorry about that.

I'm wondering what I can do for my apartment. I cant really drill into anything or run much in the way of wires. I have read the ENTIRE camera thread too.

If you can't run wires, you're basically limited to self-contained cameras with internal recording (or wifi cameras that record to a remote computer/drive).  All you have to do is run power.

Alternatively, you could go with a self-contained covert solution (like those clock-radios or wall-clocks that house a self-contained DVR) for inside the apartment.

Installing something outside your apartment will be very difficult, so as an alternative, you could get one of those peep-hole cameras that records through the peep-hole in your door.  A nifty way to hide it would have to be found... in a college-type apartment, you could get one of those plug-in beer signs, securely mount it on the back of the door, and house the camera/DVR inside of it (you could even power it from the beer-light itself... most of those plug-in somewhere).

You'd have to use your imagination a bit on that one.

ETA:  Here... some cheap piece-o-junk like this?  Found all over the place in college towns at the end of the semester... or on Ebay (where I found that one).  You could fit an entire DVR inside that thing.

Well I have a server and a VM set up for zoneminder already after rigging up my parents house. In a perfect world I would have a camera watching the door from the outside and a camera watching the door from the inside so I could record who attempted to enter and who did enter. I've looked at a few wireless cameras but id like to get one in hand before I make a judgement on them.
