Looking for suggestions for securing ammunition.  All my ammo is kept in .30 and .50 cans (or tins if they come packaged that way) but I don't have anything to keep them from being stolen or from becoming potential hazard in a fire.  The only place I have room is out in my garage where other flammable materials are at.  I have thought about fire rated cabinet or look for a low end safe that I could stack the cans in.  Another concern I have is that as the number of firearms increases in my safe the different calibers and quantities will increase, so I would need something large enough to expand.

What do you guys do or have suggestions for?

I just store them on the floor of my closet in ammo cans.

Build a vault?

I keep mine in ammo cans in the fire safe I outgrew several years ago.  The problem I have is that my ammo safe is full.

I will have to PCS at some point; building a vault wouldn't be best choice for resale of the house.  I would like to when I finally retire from the Army but that is still aways off.

I only have one safe and it isn't quite full yet, getting there though.

Harbor Freight carries a *generic* version a little cheaper.

Where is it listed on the Harbor Freight site?  Is this an actual HAZMAT storage box?

Same dilemma, and in the military too.

I went the cheap route for now and aquired a heavy duty office cabinet (locking) for ammo and keep it in the garage.
The end game will be a lower end safe exclusively for ammo.
I do like the JOBOX route too....hmmmmm

JobSite Box/Chests are great for keeping the kids out and encouraging the drugies to move on.  They hold a tremendous volume and can be loaded into the BOV for secure transit.

My JOBox is full and needs a little brother for overflow.

No, ammo isn't hazmat. It's just a large, heavy-duty security box. You lock all your ammo in there. Can't be picked up easily when full and they're probably moderately challenging to break into.

This.  I use a Ridgid job box I picked up locally on Craigslist for a hundred bucks.  Locks up nice and tight and holds a shitload of ammo cans

Get a propane cage from Craigslist.

I went the office cabinet route. Fits well in the garage and no one knows the difference. Not the most secure thing in the world but its one more level for someone to have to screw with. More of an out of sight out of mind type thing. The propane cage would be fun to look at but thats the problem, everybody can look at it.

Some plywood with a few bolts and washers and the front is completely camoflaged. If you can find one they are cheap and built heavy though.

Checked Craigslist, didn't find any propane cages and new ones are $700 plus (for the size I need) at that point I might as well look at lower end safe.  Down side to another safe is more weight and hastle when it comes time to PCS.

How much weight could a filing cabinet hold though?

IIRC a Sentry Safe can hold 18 50cal ammo cans 3 wide and six tall at a cost of under $300.

Hmm, now I'm gonna have to go comb craigslist.

If it were me (and it will be soon )  I would just by a cheap stack-on cabinet, and store the ammo in ammo cans in the safe.  They can be had for just a little bit more than locking file cabinets and are bigger.  Those JoBoxes look great...but I don't have $400 to spend on securing my ammo as I am also trying to finance a good gun safe on a tight budget.

You can find job boxes on CL all the time in the $100-$150 range.  The added benefit of a used one is they're usually banged up and offer good camouflage in a garage

Wonder if the shelves can hold the weight?

pull the shelves and stack the cans on each other.  No way that shelf will hold the weight
