So my wife is onboard with me getting a safe for myself for Christmas and I really need to do it as my little guy is getting around alot more and I figure it's just a matter of time before he's able to get to any hiding place so....
My collection is mostly some ARs with optics and tactical style rifles as I am not a hunter. So lots of pistol grips and crap to contend with. I also have a decent amount of pistols and one SBR with more on the way. I am mostly concerned with keeping the little guys fingers off of stuff and minimal attack theft resistance (figure more apt to be crackheads than safecrackers going at it), I figure in a real fire I'm screwed anyway. I would like a widebody safe so that perhaps I could hang SBRs on the inside of the door since they wont work well in a standard rifle "rack". Safe would be going on a first floor on a slab so I can bolt it down in a corner. I have Pergos in that room so I will probably have to trim them where the safe is going to be if the safe is heavy but I don't want to break them getting it in either. I was looking at a Browning Theftgard at a local shop that I think is this one for like $1200. My local shop has a Heritage 306022 like this for $799. The Heritage is smaller and I like the size of the Browning but don't want to bother if it's a total piece of crap. I also looked at a Cabelas safe made by Cannon, this one but thought it looked like pretty crappy build quality. Help me out here guys, how are the Brownings? Would I be better off going with the smaller Heritage? Or point me in some other direction. I would be looking around that $1200 price max so please don't show me any $3000 safes. TIA |

Follow on what you've said about your situation, the Liberty Fat Boy Jr. is on sale during Thanksgiving. Find a dealer who can get you the rebate form. It is not on their website.
This model is equal in quality to the safes you've mentioned and has lots of room. It MUST be bolted down, however, because of its design. |

If my budget was $1200 this is what I would get. In addition to it's other benefits it's 7 gauge versus the Browning's 12 gauge.

Its perfect and for the $$ its the best value out there. Call 'em up and talk to the owner. He KNOWS his shit about safes. Ask them about scratch & dent or overstock deals. H. |

Banshee,
I know you wanted something bigger for a safe but I think you'd be surprised at how much the safe that btn referenced can hold (18 Long Guns plus shelves). For $1200 on a gun safe, I think you'll be a lot happier in the end owning a quality safe like Sturdy Safe makes then those cheaper models. Sturdy will also provide a lifetime warranty for a burglary attempt or mechanical defect (that safe isn't fire lined so there won't be lifetime fire warranty as there is for their fire lined safes). I purchased my safe from them two years ago and I still feel I made the best choice and would gladly do it again. If you really do need the extra room for your collection, did you consider building or reinforcing a closet instead? A 36" wide steel fire door at Home Depot goes for $300. With a nice dead bolt and a bunch of 5/8" fire rated gypsum double layered on the inner and outer walls and ceiling, you'll have the security to keep the kids out and decent fire protection too. |
