Going active duty soon, and I'm needing some long-term storage for five rifles and five pistols. I'm going to convert a little closet in my parents' house into a gun safe. It's an out-of-the-way little room, and I'm just going to put a deadbolt on it. I might have a safe bolted to the floor inside, as well. What should I do to keep my gear from rusting out or getting mold or other problems? Everything will be unused for one year at a time. What about those dry storage bags they sell online? Are those any good?

How humid is your area?

If it's really really humid, the VCI poly gun bags may be your best bet.  Poly Gun Bags

Otherwise, just oil them up really good with something like Birchwood Casey's Barricade, pop them in a silicone treated gun sock, and stick some Damp-Rid in the room and you're done.

I know of people who own guns which have not been fired for several years. Many swear by those silicone impregnated gun cloths and have never seen a lick of rust. And they are really only wiped down if they are handled. No special bags needed. A year storage is nothing.
