| Guys I'm in need of a small (probably 1.5 cu. ft.) Data/Media safe, I'd prefer 2 hr. fire protection, but can probably get by with 1 hr. I'll bolt it either to the floor or wall. Any suggestions, or opinions? |
| If your a Costco member, there are a bunch on their website. Search "safe". This one is nice if you want to run your back while leaving it in the safe Sentry USB Powered Safe |

Quoted:
Costco doesn't carry anyhting data or media rated. Something around the size your looking for with a real data or media rating should cost at least $1000.00! I don't think that's accurate. Media rated safe 1 Media safe 2 |

Data and media rated safes have to stay under 125 degrees inside, neither one of those safes you listed at costco does that. They are both rated for paper, so they stay under 350 degrees. So unfortunately, Costco does not carry a data or media rated safes. That manufacturer just put those names on those safes. There is no such thing as a waterproof safe either, just water resistant.

I'm well aware of what a media rated safe means. You're claiming that these statements by Sentry on the website are outright lies and I'm wondering on what basis do you make those assumptions.. "Media protection - ETL™ verified protection for CD's, DVD's, memory sticks and USB drives to 1,850 degrees fahrenheit " That's a safe with a 2 hour UL rating and should be well capable of meeting the media rating. |

Quotes directly taken from the product description from the links you posted:
"Fire protection - UL® classified 1 hour fire protection to 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining an internal temperature of less than 350 degrees." That needs to say "internal temperature of less than 125 degrees." On the other safe I called The manufacturer, and its only rated at a 350 degree internal max temp as well. So, unfortunately it does not meet the internal heat requirements of a real media safe. If they did, the inside dimensions would be less than 1 cubic foot of storage space on each safe. This would be because of the amount of insulation required to keep the safe at 125 degrees inside. This is a real media safe. Real Media Safe I run the office at a Safe Store, and sell safes for a living. Safes are what I do everday. |

Thanks for taking the time to clarify your expertise. I wasn't trying to throw flames your way, but when it comes to blanket statements decrying manufacturers and retailers sites as full-on bullshit it's nice to somehow identify yourself as having a leg to stand on. I do find it interesting that they're full of crap but apparently they are.
It looks like Sentry does make a 125 class media safe, but it's also $2000 and not available at Costco so I stand corrected. |
