Very interested in this, but not much chance of getting my hands on one before purchase.  But I played with an early gen 1 556 when they first came out and found them to be exceedingly front heavy.  How front heavy is the 556r?  Is there a rail system that is ultralight and helps? Is there an aftermarket aluminum piston tube?

They are front heavy, because they are a piston rifle.  Get one without the rail and it will alleviate some of that.   Figure out a way to mount a Magpul UBR and it will be well balanced (heavy on both ends)

I find my 556R to be a little front heavy, but not to the point that I notice it without actually thinking about it. I prefer slightly more weight fore than aft........helps keep the muzzle down down durin rapid fire.

If SIG shifted the weight where it had was even, or had more to the rear, a different set of folks would gripe about that!

My Sandstorm makes everything a little more front heavy, but I wouldn't want to shoot it without it.

I'd say mine is a little front heavy, but I could care less.

I don't find it overly front-heavy with the standard polymer handguards and the Swiss-style stock. The center of weight is definitely forward, but nothing unusual for a piston gun.

The one upgrade I'd strongly recommend is the Hogue pistol grip, which makes the safety WAY easier to operate (and is, IMHO, much more comfortable).

Plus one on the Hogue grip, plus the Krebs extended safety for easy reach.  I have the standard handguards with a Surefire Scout light on the provided rails, and although a little front heavy, it shoots accurately and fast.  I have an SAR-1 AK that has slightly better balance, but is not nearly as accurate, requires more accessories for light and optics.  I love the side folding stock of the Sig.
