| I just bought a new 556R. These don't come with iron sights, and there is a dovetailed piece of metal inserted where the front sight usually goes. Has anyone removed it and installed a front sight? If so, which direction is best to tap it out? Left to right or right to left? Who makes the best front sight for this rifle, Samson or Troy? Thanks! |

Mine came with the SIG iron sights. Yeah, they are not standard AR15 BUIS but they work great. I didn't think I'd like them at first but after using them I realized that for my eyes, the smaller holes in the rear sight work better than the standard AR15 BUIS I have on my ARs.
Other than that, the sights are limited compared to the number of AR15 BUIS manufacturers/styles. |

Samson and Midwest Industries. |

I used the MI and plenty of blue locktite, and his has held up well with no play whatsover. When I first mounted it, after an extended shooting session, it has a litle fore and aft play. I have done a lot of research on Google, and have found with both Samson and MI comments about a little fore and aft play.
I contact MI about swapping out my front sight, and they were kind and said they would gladly do so, but I might have the same issue. They said their MI sight fit the original 556 perfectly, but have found out the dove tail on the 556R is a little wider. So I did what people recommended on my search, put locktite in the dovetail at all contact sites, and screwed it in tight. Several hundred rounds later, there is absolutely no wiggle in that front sight. And just FYI, I use the Troy for my rear and get 1/3 co-witness with my Aimpoint Pro red dot. |

I purchased the Sig sight set (rear diopter and hooded front sight)... They shipped it to me and I was geeked when I heard the doorbell. Tore into the box.... They had shipped me a box labeled as Sig 556 Sight Set (Rear Diopter and Hooded front sight), unfortunately it only included the rear diopter.
I called Sig and they're shipping me the front sight for free. That's great and all, considering I paid for both items, BUT now I get to wait another week for the front sight to show up. |

When you get all set up with your Sig sights, give us some feedback. My BUIS are AR height, so I need the spacer in my Aimpoint for co-witness. With the lower Sig sights, I could probably take out the Aimpoint Spacer, and have everything closer to the bore line. |

They're pretty nice. Not SAN Sig quality (Swiss), but nice. Despite the fact that they are designed for 5.56 trajectory, I mounted them on my 556R (7.62x39). I sighted the weapon in at 100 yds and it's fairly accurate. Way WAY more than accurate enough to hit a man at that range. Groups were less than 6" with Tula and Wolf. I don't have ANY glass on this weapon yet, so it's irons only at this time. Hopefully I'll be able to purchase some optics for it soon. I'm hoping to save up for a Browe or ACOG with a 7.62x39 calibrated reticle. One negative about the diopters is that they might be too high to use with a red dot and a hooded front sight might make the sight interfere with the dot. I'm considering yanking the Trijicon Tripower off of my PTR32 and mount it on the 556R just to see if it works. The Trijicon is in a low Larue mount, so that would approximate a low mounted Aimpoint. |

Grabbed my Trijicon Tripower (in a Larue Low Aimpoint Ring Mount) and stuck it on the Sig556R with the Sig Diopters. IMO, you can easily use these sights with a Trijicon Tripower or Aimpoint, ASSUMING you want absolute cowitness.
For gits and shiggles, I pulled my Trijicon RMR Dual Illuminated Green Triangle off of my MP5 clone and stuck it on the 556R and it was also an absolute cowitness in an American DefenseAD-RMR Mini Quick-Release Trijicon RMR Picatinny Low Mount. I'm considering beginning to save for the latter of those two set ups to live on the 556R, assuming I don't go with a magnified optic like an ACOG/Browe. It would be easy as hell to sight the weapon in at 100yds for the TIP of the triangle reticle, and use the body of the triangle for closer quick aiming. Also, once you have an optic (RDS) on the weapon the diopter drum could be left on the CQB setting (open V) and switched to the longer range aperture as needed. |
