So my good karma after years and years and years of never getting in on good deals on gun stuff, and yet wishing those who did congratulations, finally paid off. After sifting through about 80 pages of a search on the googles I found a dudes sketchy website who was selling swiss 551 magazines for 39 bucks. He had ten in stock, so I bought all of them. They came in last week.
I've been thinking. In order to get these guys to fit in regular M4 pouches, I was contemplating taking a cutting wheel to the mag couplers on the side. That way they'll go in the pouches smoother and more importantly, draw quicker. Side thoughts A - I'll only do it to maybe 6 of the mags, since 6 is all I'd carry on my kit. Max. B - I don't care about resale value C - I don't care about coupling magazines - I am a straight man and have absolutely no use for that sort of homosexuality on my rifle - that said I respect your right to do gay stuff with your guns. Really all I'm worried about is function. Is there anything I need to worry about? Is the plastic brittle and going to crack on me? Does anyone have any sort of experience in this sort of thing? Oddly enough, I have thought of doing the same to my SIG 551 magazines. Those studs and knobs on these magazines are very annoying; and like you, I am not concerned with coupling magazines together. In reviewing videos on YouTube of the Swiss Army using their SIG 551s, I can only assume that this capability to couple magazines together is a Swiss Military requirement.
I am not worried about removing these studs and knobs on my SIG 551 magazines because in my opinion, the market for all firearms and related equipment has permanently changed into availability, shortages, and higher prices. I am very confident that in the future I will be able to sell my SIG 551 magazines without the interlocking studs and knobs on them. Post some pictures when you are done!
