A few days ago I was looking for a GSG-5 and stumbled across a Sig 522 at Academy. I giggle like a schoolgirl every time I fondle my Sig 1911 TacOps TB, so I had to take a look at the 522. I couldn't makeup my mind after wandering the store for half an hour, so I went back to the gun counter and asked to see the mags. Yup, identical to my AR .22 kit mags, so I did the paperwork and snuck it home so the wife wouldn't kill me with it.
Today I finally had a chance to shoot it and I'm very impressed. The trigger is fairly light and smooth, it fits me well, and out of about 200 rounds it failed once. I was shooting with the stock folded, from the hip, and an empty case stovepiped with another round chambered. Very obvious the case bounced off the stock, so I can't fault the gun. It was purely the idiot on the trigger. I also ran a mag each with the gun sideways, each direction, and upside down trying to make it fail. No luck. Accuracy is good, too. We were just shooting swinging steel plates offhand, so I have no groups, but even without touching the irons it was about .25" high and ad center at 20 yards. Easily as accurate as my AR with a CMMG kit. My only complaint is loading the mags, but, again, not the gun's fault. Just to see how it would work I pulled the Aimpoint off the AR and stuck it on the Sig. The Aimpoint is in a Larue 152 mount to lower the profile on the AR, but it also happens to be the perfect height for the Sig. On the AR I get an upper third cowitness with the folding irons, and on the Sig it's a lower 3rd. I'd love to find a set of folding irons, but I'll be happy with a diopter rear sight. Now I just have to find a 556 Classic and wait for Brownells to get the Samson rails back in stock. Oh, and order order more Black Dog mags. |
| As soon as the rails are back in stock I'm spending the $130 (thanks to the LEO discount). Very reasonable price in my opinion. I need to get my trust finished and send off the bribe to make a 5.56 can that the Sig, AR, Buckmark, and 10/22 can share. The Primary Arms red dot shipped today, so it'll be waiting when I get home, and I'm going to see if I can find an MOE grip to modify and stick on there. |

Finally got home. Put about 800 rounds of Federal Champion, Remington Subsonic, Fiocchi, and Winchester Wildcat through the Sig and had exactly 3 failures:
1- One misfire. The strike looked good, so it was just a bad round. 2- Rear sight fell off due to the elevation adjustment setscrew vibrating loose. No loctite on the setscrew at all. 3- Rear sight fell off again, this time due to the windage setscrew vibrating loose as above. Both of the rear sight setscrews are loctited now, and my Primary Arms red dot got here a couple of days ago. Threw it on tonight and got a perfect absolute co-witness with the irons using the standard mount. |
