Anybody know if the Sig 716 .308 is still in the works?

It was advertised on their website a couple of days ago.  I didn't know that Sig was thinking about not moving forward with the rifle.

Can you point me to the advertisement?  I can't seem to find it on their site. I see the initial announcement from January 10'.

Sure.  My imbedding-fu is weak but here is the link:

This is Sig's most current LE catalog.

Here's the heated link:

Thanks for the link.  I see they've gone with the Smith Brake that, although effective, is 3,482 inches long and makes Medusa feel better about her looks.....  Who makes the BUIS?  They are fugly too.  Oh well, that's Sig for you.

The reason that I saw the ad was because a LE buddy of mine is looking at piston .308 rifles and he pointed me to it.  My buddy called Sig and the rep told him that it would be a mid-November release date.  Usually the gun companies will release a couple of demo rifles to the gun rags for some teaser articles but I haven't seen any so far.

Yes, the 716 is still a go.  Not sure about the release date, but they will be produced.

It's good to see that they will be produced.  However, why did they go with that brake?  I would think that the PWS would be better looking and more effective.  Perhaps they're trying to keep the cost down.  Yes, yea.  I know I can just remove it if I don't like it.  I also wonder why the AR-10 platform instead of the SR-25?  I'm guessing/hoping that it has to do with the piston function.  The gen II AR10 mags are supposed to be great for function, and should be at 2.5 times the cost of the Pmags.   Speaking of cost, does anybody have a ball park figure on the 716?

However, why did they go with that brake?

At the time of the photographs the 716 was still in the developement process.  To be direct, I don't think they had any standard 308 A2 flash suppressors around and they just used whatevery they could acquire.  I would seriously doubt the final version will include that particular compensator.

I also wonder why the AR-10 platform instead of the SR-25?

Once again, pre-production model.  The final model will use the SR-25/ Pmag platform, not the AR10 mags.

does anybody have a ball park figure on the 716?

Very tought to say at this point, so don't take this as gospel, but I'm thinking $1,500-$1,800 range.

Are you sure of this?  It'll take the SR25/Pmags?

If so, good call.

I was told by the guys at the Sig Sauer Academy Store that it should be end of the year. Which basically means my guess is as good any anyones.

And if it's in the $1500-$1800 price range, score!  I'm guessing it will be closer to $2K.  Sitll, ain't bad.

Yeah, when I called to tell the head of the developement team for the 716 to tell him that Sig needed to dump the AR10 mags and go with the Pmags he told me the change was already in the works.

Even $1900-2000 would put it about $300 less than the nearest quality competition AR308.

Ex:
SR25- $5K
REPR- $3.5K
OBR- $3K
SCAR-H- Somewhere in here, maybe more?
MWS- $2.3K
716-$2K?

I really hope they fix the carbine length rail/gas. If they've made it SR25 pattern that's a huge step though.

USSA-1, where did you get the ~$1700 figure?

The $1,500-$1,800 figure?....SWAG.

I'm figuring the 716 will be 500-800 more than the 516.

I'll see if I can't lock down a better estimate.  Gimme a day or so.

USSA-1,
If you don't mind me asking. About what time frame did you hear that the mag change was under way?  Was it recently?  The reason I ask is that it is significant.  I think it amounts to a whole system change.  The different mag will equal a different lower, upper, bolt carrier, etc. New designs and testing will take some time.

I was wondering the same thing. It was pretty easy to see the armalite influence

I really don't think this is the case.  The only change to the lower will be a slight change in how the magazine well is machined.  It will not require a whole new lower and it will not affect the upper or bolt carrier design.

So it will be a Armalite patterned upper with a DPMS pattern lower
10/25/2010 7:06:20 PM EDT
[#19]
There is no Armalite pattern upper or DPMS pattern lower.  They are Sig upper/lowers.  At this point I don't know if the Sig upper/lowers will be interchangeable with other manufacturers products.  While most of the standard upper/lowers in 5.56 are interchangeable, it's really not that way when it comes to the 7.62 models.  It's entirely possible the 716 will not interchange with any other model.  Using a DPMS/MagPul pattern magazine does not guarantee interchangeability.

Although I will see what I can find out....
