I would like to build a 552 clone. What do I need to do to convert a Sig 556 pistol to a Sig 552 clone?

I know I have submit my Form 1, but here is what I don't know. Do I need to need to replace the lower receiver, so a Sig 55X series folding stock can be added?

If you want it to be a more true 552 clone then yes you would need a SIG 550/551/552 type lower but then it would take only 55x series magazines.

If you want to make an almost 552 clone you could use a 556 classic lower (much cheaper than the 55x lower) and still be able to use the original 55x style stock and the benefit of being able to use AR mags.

It just depends on how much you are willing to spend and if the magazine is an issue for you.

You may also want to put a true 552 style handguard and handguard cap on it too.

Actually this will be more of a 553 clone since the gas piston system on a P556 is more like the 553 which is an improvement over the 552's gas system that has the spring behind the bolt carrier.

If I went with the SIG 550/551/552 type lower, will I have to modify the upper receiver?

everything I have read about it says no. The 556 upper is made to the same dimensions as the 55x upper. You may have to get different pivot and take down pins though. The KNS pins should work if your P556 lower doesn't already have them. 66x mags are going to be a bit harder to find and quite a bit more expensive.

The cost of the SIG mags is the only thing holding me up from getting a 55X lower. I think I will use a 556 Lower w/ original SIG folding stock. I already have a good supply of Pmags.
