This was supposed to be a "limited edition" but it seems like there are a bunch out there.
Anyone know how many were produced, or if they still are being made?

From what i have heard there were 1000 made for Sports South.

Correct. They were a Sports South Exclusive Special Edition of 1000 rifles. Sports South sold the last of them before the end of November. There are a handful still available from dealers, but most are now in the hands of shooters.

I wouldn't say there was a bunch of them around. Between Gunbroker.com and GunsAmerica combined there are currently three available for sale. I suppose if the owners of all 1000 posted photos of their Commandos, it would seem like one hell of lot of them, but I've only seen maybe 20-30 different Commandos on the various boards including my own.

I really like my Commando - much more than the stock 556.  I had a chance to get a stock 556 recently at a decent price but realized I could not live with the cheesy furniture, and by the time I replaced all that I would be well over the price of another Commando.  So, next purchase will be another Commando, or a Classic.

There is only one Commando on gunbroker.com right now and dozens of non-commando models if that speaks to their rarity at all.

Wow, I'm glad I acted when I did.  I thought I had plenty of time to get one and leisurly bought when I did.  I can't understand why Sig would not make that a standard production model...

Because they're (eventually) selling the Classic model, while the Commando was basically a stop-gap measure.
