So just how do you get Sig 556 Hand Guards off

screw driver, hammer, Blow torch ,plastic explosive, nuclear device, or a biological weapon?

And I though AR hand guards where a pain.......

Seperate the upper and lower by unscrewing the front pivot pin and removing it with a small punch. Push out rear pin. Remove lower handguard first then upper. Pretty simple

So the upper must be removed from the lower to remove the hand guards?

Yes, because you have to remove the front pivot pin. The pin itself goes through the lower handguard mounting tab.

I watched a dealer wrestle with the hand guards for 5 minutes at a local fun store while inquiring about said rifle. The poor kid even broke a sweat fighting the gun into submission, I thanked him for the demo and told him it was not that big of a deal. Hey you can't be an expert on everything right, and good for him for trying.
