I live in SC. Can I buy a handgun and legally give it to my son who lives in NC? He has no criminal record, etc.

Only if he picks it up at an FFL in NC. All interstate firearms transfers must go through an FFL, except in the case of an inheritance.

Correct. He will also need a NC pistol permit.
