I am wanting to start accepting credit cards, anybody have any advice on what company I should look into?  I have talked to payment alliance but don,t like the $15.90 a month charge. But their rates are lower. Haven't checked intuit, but supposedly there are no monthly fees. Any advice would be appreciated.

You really have to project the number and dollar amount of credit card transactions in order to figure out what deal is best for you. What type of business are you in?

I am a home FFL dealer. I think I could increase sales if I accepted credit cards.

Square and the other smart phone readers are very convienant for small time dealers like myself. 2.75% per transaction.

This is what I was coming in here to suggest as well. Was just buying a cake yesterday and the lady had me pay using Square. Fast and easy. She said it gave her much more flexibility in her business dealings, and was very pleased.

We had a 'traditional' CC processor for my wifes business (eye dr) at the time rates were cheapest we could find.. BUT we had a minimum usage of like $40/mth

I think the smart phone doo-hickies is the best idea, and seems to be the cheapest with a very low rate and no minimum usage

You are going to trade off between high monthly costs or high per usage.  And, I doubt that 2.75% is really all you'll be paying per transaction, iwith such a low volume.  Also have per transaction flat rates to add in there.

Typically you are told the cheapest rate, without the add on percentages.  Sort of like getting a phone contract.  They tell you 39.99 a month, but it ends up being a $64.00 bill after all the little things get tacked on.

Also, how much are you willing to pay for customer support, supplies, equipment, and security?

They're all different and they all configure they're charges differently in order to confuse you about how much it's costing you. Some charge you for the machine monthly, others give it to you to use  but charge higher fees and some will sell you the terminal. Ifyou're doing minimal transactions I'd say the Squarething may be the easiest.  I process quite a few cards during my busy season.  I Started with Heartland and switched to Prodigy two years ago. I have not had anyone be able to beat prodigy's deal so far. Different cards have different rates as well. Pin based debits will be a different fee than creditcards, and rewards cards are generally higher also, because you as the merchant are being charged extra so the consumer can get his rewards. Its almost impossible to figure out one of their processing bills yourself.

Nope.
It's 2.75% for swipes.............nothing else is charged.
No monthly fee, no transaction fee, no terminal rental fee............2.75%

Bear in mind that if you accept a payment for a firearm using Square, the card must be swiped.  Keyed transactions are not permitted per their TOS.  So, you couldn't use it to process CC payments for purchasers who buy your stuff on GunBroker.

They also keep anything over $2500 in a 7 day period for 30 days

I guess that is one of the things that they forgot to mention today when I talked with them. Do any of the smart phone thingies let you key in the cards number?

CSR reps can't read your mind..........but you can read the terms of service yourself.

Yes, you can key in "virtual" transactions.

Have you visited the Square website? Their FAQ's answer a lot of questions.
