ATF traces indicate a law enforcement request. Not necessarily a criminal investigation, but formal LE interest of some sort.
Only trace I've had was for guns being disposed of as part of a D.V. restraining order, one of which I sold to the man, years after I sold it to him. I later ran into him and asked what the ruckus had been, and he told me his wife left him, got an RO, and he had to turn his collection over to his attorney. I guess the police or court put them in lockup until things got resolved, and "ran" them all. |

Most of the time, when we get a request for a trace it's something that we sold 10+ years ago. As long as you're cautious about preventing straw purchases, it's pretty rare to see a trace from something sold recently. |
