Our gun shop is nearing our opening. We have had a soft opening this week, selling a few special order guns. Buying inventory is difficult. We have Sports South, Lipsey's, RSR, and Davidsons as distributors. It appears that Glock, Smith, and Ruger are out of the question. Is also seems getting AR's is impossible as well. Is this a normal cycle? Any tips on getting AR's right now?

I was talking to the manager at my local AR hotspot.. he told me that DPMS (iirc) was 2000 complete rifles backordered and climbing.  I can only imagine that they aren't the only manufacturer experiencing that.  At this particular store, the parts to build ARs get snapped up just about as soon as they are hung on the wall. (sometimes by me even, lol).

Doubt that helps you any, but it seems it will calm down after the election if this trend follows what happened during the last one.

Base model rifles are almost non existent right now.  We get it in the higher end guns such as LWRC, KAC etc. without much problem though.  I made an order for 12+ Spike's rifles and was quoted 2-3 months, which seems about normal for right now.  We are just laying in as many as we can for the time being.

One of the quickest ways to get inventory is to purchase the stocking dealer packages.

The more you buy from a distributor the more you will get.  You need to spend money to get product.

We have at least one call a day from a distributor saying they have 1 or 2 items.

When they call us like that 99% of the time we take what they have.   This keeps them calling.....

Just got 4 of the Ruger 10/22 take down models from 2 different distributors.     Most of the time they only get like 5-10 items in then they are split up between sales people.  You will need to get a sales person at a distributor that will hook you up, of course you need to be a big purchaser to get in good with them.

Many years ago we had the same problem, now we always have at least 350 to 400 guns on hand.  The key is to look like a serious player if you want something tell your rep you want 10 of them and you will get 1 or 2 reasonably soon and the rest will trickle in.  There are times that it would take 12-15 months to get all of the 10 you ordered but you would always have 1 or 2 coming shortly.

As we have found over the years you need to buy alot to be able to get what you want.
