I'm not from MT but if the city requires a license then you have to get it.
Check with county also they may require a county license o do business.
If you are going to resale then you need a tax number. You are supposed to collect and remit sales tax for items sold.
Be sure you are straight on zoning. I'd hate to spend the money on all the licenses, tax bond and find out you cannot do business from home.
Good luck.
Oh, and if they still ask on the FFL application that you are using it to acquire personal firearms you may want to thing that one through a little bit more.

You do not have to get your licenses before you get your FFL, but you can't do business until all your licenses are in place.

I applied for and received my home-occupation permit from the city before I got my FFL, because my R1 zoning required it before ATF would issue an FFL to my house address.

After I had my FFL in hand, I applied for my city and state/county retail sales tax licenses, and registered with the city police department (which was required at that time).  No business license is required for a firearms business in my city, so all I have are the permit, the FFL and the sales tax licenses.

My recommendation is to research everything carefully, and make sure you won't have any problems getting one or more of the required licenses or permits.  Once you're satisfied, then get whatever you have to get to get the FFL, then get the FFL, then you can finish up with any other required licenses or permits before actually opening for business.

Unless your city, county or state has some weird rule about door sizes, your garage door will do fine.

You don't have to have a federal tax ID at all if the business is a sole proprietorship, but you can get one, if like, or if you're going to apply for your SOT, too.

Remember to put up your Youth Handgun Safety Act posterette, and prominently post all your licenses at your business premises, as required by law.

Review all those books the ATF will send you along with your license.  Read them, study for it like it's an exam you have to pass.  It's your responsibility to know everything in those books related to your location and your business, so you might as well learn it.

mt does not have a sales tax but there are a few federal taxes that i have run across that need paid with certain purchases.
