I did my interview some weeks back in regards to Type 07, (going to manufacture AR lowers).

The interviewer was not at all concerned on security in my opinion.

She asked what I plan to do in my shop for security and told her I was planning on just getting a gun safe and storing the receivers in there. I also told her in the main building I may plan on creating a store front and in the event that I start retailing locally (which I plan to typically sell components either wholesale or internet sales) that I will put a heavy steel door on a brick room I have in the basement and turn it into a vault style room. She told me that was not required, just a door with a dead bolt on it.

She did recommend  mesh on the windows here and there and did tell me that I need to have trigger locks on site in the event with dealing with hand guns.

Did I just take it all the wrong way, or are they really laxed on security requirements, or is it just so vague that they want you to decide how to secure your own firearms?

There is no legal requirement for security at all.

Just has to be a door locked.  Which is good.  It would be a nightmare if they tried to define and regulate security measures because every building is different, every city and county has different ordinances concerning bars and mesh on windows, etc, etc.

Well I guess it wasn't just me...lol

I actually live in a small town, we don't have any building regulations here, the City differs to the State on everything. They do want their money for a permit from time to time.

Thanks!

Nope, ATF doesn't even require that you have a door.

The only Federal law or ATF regulation regarding "secure storage" has to do with child safety locks....not with your business premises.

During my initial interview when I first got my FFL...  the BATF response to my heavy security was the exact opposite of what I expected.

I've got approx $10k into an alarm system and CCTV camera system in my shop. Every square inch of the showroom and parking lot are covered by cameras and recorded on a 1TB hard drive.

When the two agents came for the interview... one of them had a stick up her ass. She asked if they were being recorded. I said yes, you are being recorded, as indicated by a large sign on the front door you walked through. She asked me to turn it off. I turned off the TV monitor in the showroom, but the DVR runs all the time... and because it was a new system, I wasn't really sure how to operate it yet anyway. The interview and agents were recorded. It was obvious to me that they were really uncomfortable with it.

Well... long story short, she reported the incident and had BATF council contact my attorney to confirm what was/was not being recorded. My attorney confirmed that only video was recorded, audio was not... and that we are well aware of the PA wiretapping laws. The system is capable of audio, but the equipment just isn't there to do it. The issue died right there and and a 2nd "follow-up" interview was scheduled.

It definitely was NOT the reaction I expected from them.

That is a bit over the top...

On a similar note... When I was contacted I noticed the telephone number on caller ID. I googled it. Well put it this way, the "area" code doesn't exist. When the Investigator was leaving I mentioned the cell phone number, I got the funniest look in the world. I immediately thought to myself, "Note to self, do not bring up things that do not need bringing up".

I can just imagine the feeling you were experiencing during that conversation about being taped.
