We had a guy pick up on a transfer about 4 handguns in 2 transactions over less than 5 days. We sent in the multiple form. BATFE paid a visit about a month later and wanted info on the guy, etc. and when we asked what's up, they said they reviewed the multiple form and were curious about why he was buying so many. Prior posts have talked about BATFE not being concerned about small matters. Maybe this guy isn't a small matter, but we've have lots of customers transfer in a lot more handguns than this guy and no BATFE visit. |

same thing happened to a guy who purchased several AR lowers from me several months back. although they were not multiple sales of handguns, during a compliance check the auditor (that's what i call them) asked me why the guy bought so many. i said i really didnt know. anyway, about a month later two ATF agents paid a visit to his home to check if he still had them and wanted to check serial #'s. he asked if they had a warrant and they said no so he did not let them in his house. he did tell me he provided them a list of the serial numbers and they asked him why he bought so many....his response was "that's really none of your business",,,they said ok and left.
interesting times we live in.... |

I have a customer that will buy/transfer 10-12 guns with me a couple times a year. While going my 'audit' the agent had a list of the MHG forms and wanted to look 'closer' at those 4473's. I was asked about this gentleman, I explained our relationship, that he would let things accumilate for 3-4 months and then drive 60 miles to pick every thing up. The agent was good with this explaination and went on to the next item.
I have had the ATF call me about a MHG form that had the 'wrong' serial number for one of the guns. I forget the exact story I got from the buyer but this was an 'early' Browning that was made by someone else, when the production changed hands they must have changed the way they did their S/Ns. It is very possible that your buyer has purchased multiple hanguns at other shops and the ATF noticed and wanted to investigate a bit. Maybe it was just Monday and they had nothing better to do. How far are you from the local ATF office? |

I have known of more than one person to get a visit from the ATF after buying lots of handguns close together. The ATF did not come to the shop though. It has been a while since we have had an inspection. Usually they do one every year or so. I hope everything goes well when they do come. ![]() Jeremy |
