I am a new SOT dealer and have a question. A customer ordered a silencer and is having it transfered to me. He wants me to start his Form 4 now because the manufacturer has given me the serial number. Can I start the transfer without having the silencer in my possession or do I have to wait to do the paperwork when I receive the silencer? Just want to make sure I am doing everything the proper way. Thanks |

I would wait. ATF is taking 3-4 weeks to process Form 3's, and then the suppressor has to be shipped to you. Wait until you physically have the suppressor before sending in the Form 4's, because if for some reason you never receive it (lost or stolen in transit, manufacturer doesn't ship it, etc.) you don't want to have to deal with cancelling the Form 4 transfer, and explain to ATF why you started a transfer on an NFA item not under your control. Your customer needs to learn patience if he's going to get into the NFA game. <-- 07/02 |
"The Proper Way" is to wait until you have the silencer in hand. The SN you were given could be wrong, could change, etc. |
