Aug awful accuracy (Page 2 of 2)

I get about 1.25" with 77gr IMI and 1.75" with 55gr PMC XTAC. That's prone off a bag with an ACOG at 100yds with 10 shot groups. I've got two A3M2's with 1:7 twist barrels, and both shoot like this. I will add that both are suppressed and I've got the Steyr suppressed gas plug on both. It's not as accurate as my Mk12, but I think a lot of that is the optic and lack of bipod. I can hit a 2/3 IPSC at 800 with 77gr ammo with reasonable consistency. The ACOG reticle happens to line up with my drop such that the fat part of the reticle is dead on at 800 with 77gr. |

It benefits greatly from the updated Steyr trigger springs and Ratworx sear. steyr gunsmith told me to stay away from metal sear for plastic on metal wear. corvus is testing a metal trigger pack, but said only time will tell how the carrier ass end wears on the hammer |

I'm not going to post my AUG groups because this is the internet and everyone is a Delta Ninja Seal Red Team DevGru GROM pinnicle sniper. Having said that, I've owned and shot AUGs since the beginning of the 1990s and have yet to own or shoot one that is not REMARKABLY accurate. The triggers make accuracy more difficult than an AR with a Geissele trigger, but once you learn the trigger the AUG will likely outshoot the vast majority of us. They're amazing guns. |

I won't posts my groups (no video proof) but we are getting essentially the same results. My particular barrel (1:9) favors 55gr. I also use the 4x32 ACOG. I've never tried anything with higher magnification but am considering moving my RAZOR 1-6 over to my AUG to see if that helps my old eyes any. |

I don't know how I'm supposed to support the rifle to shoot it from a bench I know I see the pictures but I'm not going to rest it on the grip and even then that still presses on the barrel. I don't understand how you guys are shooting them without disturbing the barrel. I did hear back from steyr they told me first that my Picatinny rail Gauge is not applicable to their rail that they need a special one which is the biggest bunch of horse shit I ever heard. It's almost impossible to mount anything properly to the rail because the deck is too high and consequently the slots are too shallow in relationship to the dovetail; They then told me that the 1/7 barrel is shooting sub MOA for them. I just laughed and said I guess my 1/9 must be a quarter inch barrel then since it's groups are half the size. |

The good news is ... this means you get to spend more time at the range training. Rest the AUG on the receiver between the "trigger guard" and "VFG". ETA: Regarding the red bold in your statement: These guns are meant to be fired with the support hand imparting "load" on the barrel. Therefore, to argue resting the gun on the VFG is causing accuracy issues is incorrect. It is most likely related to trigger control. Practice staging the trigger in dry fire practice. Pull through, hit the wall, stop and focus on your target aim point, finish pulling through. Regardless, the AUG was not designed as a bench rest rifle. I, and other on this forum, have been getting groups like I posted with every unit we've tried. Remember, my groups are with WOLF STEEL CASE BIMETAL GARBAGE ammo.... |

Let me see thank you all for the pointers. I haven't had much time to shoot and I've just been trying to validate that the gun shoots ok, before I set it aside. Next time I go back I will try resting it as described. I am staging the trigger and I have to tell you those shots feel really good to me I'm no pro but I shoot the AR decent. The thing that bothers me the most r now is the alternate barrel shooting patterns for me side by side with original, same gun same ammo, every time, and steyr saying it's moa barrel. On the barrel grip comment, on bench im bearing down on it - not same as supporting weight + pulling back. |

On the barrel grip comment, on bench im bearing down on it - not same as supporting weight + pulling back. Try folding the grip up, and letting it sit on the rest after trying the method I described above. Use your "off hand / weak side / support hand" back on the stock hook (lower portion nearest to the buttplate). Use this hook to pull the AUG back into your shoulder pocket. Find what hand position feels natural to do this. Try the trigger staging listed above, but also try to not vice grip the pistol grip. At times I don't even wrap my hand around the grip of a rested AR15. the 9# trigger in an AUG requires a little more force so I typically do "grip the grip" but not like HeMan trying to Master the Universe. You have two barrels and the probability of both being non-shooters is astronomically low. I agree with Steyr. Their run of the mill barrel is MOA or better. Also ... NEVER shoot the AUG immediately after shooting any other gun. Basically every other trigger feel will spoil your AUG experience. Try focusing on just shooting your AUG until the trigger starts to feel decent if not "good" to you. Lastly, after you master the trigger and are getting consistent sub 1.5 inch 5 shoot groups ... then and only then ... consider spending $56 on the red trigger group springs. DO NOT USE THEM AS A CRUTCH FOR YOUR POOR TRIGGER CONTROL. Install after you master the standard. |

For reference, the groups I posted are with the discernibly worse trigger feel of the single-trigger-bar NATO stock (standard waffle stock has two trigger bars and feels better) withOUT red springs. I don't need red springs so I have not bought them. |

Its a plastic trigger group with a remotely located trigger. Even with AUG experience I can get sloppy with not staying the course and following through. I'll get an occasional flyer when shooting for groups because I wasn't focused on the AUG's unique feel. Stay with it. If you are a normal person, you'll end up in deep inner dialog about why you own an AR15 after mastering the AUG. It is a superior system in every way apart from the much complained about trigger feel. |

I also wrap tape around the fore grip because the suppressor gas-plug shoots gas onto the folded grip and then gets my hands dirty when I shoot unsupported. This has given me great results. It's very unusual that I cannot print at least 1-2 sub MOA 5-shot groups this way with my gun. And yes the trigger IS a limiting factor but makes it fun and challenging. The red-springs do help quite a bit. |

The red-springs do help quite a bit. I will buy red springs On the grip I've seen people selling barrels with melted grips I think I know how they got that way And I'm returning that rest the pad is strapped to and floating on top of sheet metal; on top of that you end up hitting the grip on the elevation wheel. On both counts I'm not interested in damaging the gun. ETA. One of my grips dont fold |

I got the red springs and I got this foam rest. I fucking love it. The groups tightened up to something closer to 2-3 moa [five shot] Did I mention I'm getting a repeatable 7moa ten o'clock shift between 2 barrels? One of them pretty much hit point of aim with any optic New out of the box or borrow borrowed. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07MH4529V?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image |

Was cranking the barrel down on the rest. I actually found the stiffer trigger to be more predictable. Shitty and light is a weird combination Like the shorter barrel, I was really pushing down on it harder, getting even bigger groups. Now the groups are the same size. |
