Found this bright shiny spot on the trunnion last time I cleaned the AUG (A3 model, serial 6USAxxx). I don't remember the scallop being there...

I didn't find any extra metal pieces floating around but I'm probably not going to shoot the rifle until I hear back from Steyr USA.

I wouldn't know any proper metallurgical or material mechanics terminology, but it looks like it broke where there was a flaw in the physical material.

I imagine your bolt lugs look just fine, maybe a "preexisting" condition in the trunnion just gave way? There doesn't appear to be any other damage or the telltale peening that is seen on the MSAR guns.

I would think they would want to replace it for you. I think not shooting it is probably a good idea. Unlikely to hurt anything but just to be safe...

I suspect it's from Austria, like most of the parts on the rifle.

Setting up the broaching and other machine tools to finish the blanks wouldn't be cheap.
