I've noted a few different top rails on AUG A3's lately.
First, there is the Austrian "military high rail". PJS sells those, but were any of those installed on factory guns direct from Steyr?

For the standard "short" rail, I have noticed a couple different types.
There is a 25 slot rail that comes back close to the ejection port, and extends out to the rear barrel threads.
Then I have seen a 23 slot version which is slightly shorter front and rear.

Any reason for shortening the rail? I assume the 23 slot unit is the current production standard?

There were about 100 A3s that did come with the Steyr Military high rail from Steyr.

There are actually 3 different standard short rails

Why?, only Steyr Austrian can answer that.

My take, quicker production time and less cost? Just a guess!

Thanks, Pete! The 100 factory A3's with high rails. Were they Sabre guns, or from a more recently released batch?

My Vltor AUG A3 came with a rail that had index numbers engraved in it (I can't remember if it was 23 or 25 slots, probably 23), but it was slightly out of spec and wouldn't fit most accessories on it. Steyr USA replaced it for me with a rail without any numbers engraved. I'm not sure if this numberless version is one of the three standard rails or if mine was just unfinished, but I thought it might be worth noting.
