We have a local monthly competition in which we frequently shoot anything from paper at 10 feet to 8" plates out past 300 yards during a day. We often have to shoot and transition between strong and support side and contort ourselves into different positions. I sometimes run a MSAR with 2MOA Aimpoint, but find that neither I or anyone can see small steel that has been shot up (no paint) against a similar colored rock backdrop at 300 yards without magnification. This is especially true when it's in the shadow with a strong sun behind it.
Anyway......I would like to hear / see your solution for running magnified optics on an AUG/MSAR, Tavor or any bullpup rifle. I also want to know if you are comfortable and how often you shoot it support side. Magnified optics on a rifle you don't shoot support side is easy, but it is my personal requirement that it can be used effectively support side. |

Aimpoint T-1 with 3x magnifier in a Larue Flip to Side Mount.
I run that currently on my Tavor, but have also run it in the past on an AUG and an FS2000. It is my favorite setup for multi-gun/carbine matches. Keep in mind, that with this setup, the 3x magnifier also magnify's the size of the dot. Some people find this disconcerting, as it can subtend quite a bit of your target. I run/have run: Leupold CQ/T. Acceptable, but a bit heavy. 1x setting is not as easy to use as the Aimpoint. Reticle illumination not daylight visible. Reticle is etched, so battery not required for use. Leupold 1.5x4 MKV. Acceptable but reticle illumination is not daylight visible. 1.5x setting not as esy as Aimpoint. Reticle is etched so battery not requried for use. Most precise of my options. |

I still think that the you would have issues shooting this way with the Tavor as an optic would most likely place my face at the ejection port. Shooting support with a red dot on my MSAR I get nailed in the face unless I really move back.
Someone with a Tavor please give this a try with a magnified optic. |

I will give it a try next time I am out.
The Tavor does have a brass deflector, unlike the AUG. I own an AUG, as well, so I'm very familiar with the "brass in the teeth" feature when shooting weak side. If you haven't seen the MAC video on the Tavor, you might check it out on youtube, as it addresses the weak side issue. In short, no brass to the face due to the deflector. |

Yep.... My point. The FS2000 works with magnified optics where as the AUG doesn't and I have my doubts about the Tavor. That is shooting support side. I tried the Tavor shooting magnified from the weak side today using the aimpoint t1 with the 3x magnifier. Absolutely no brass to face. This was off a bench at 300 yards , so I can't speak for all weak side positions yet, but there was not a problem today. |

I'm been running a FS2000 at our local matches which feature ranges from 2 to 350 yards, strong and weak side shooting.
I was using a TA11 until my wife decided she wanted that. It got replaced with a 1-4 Elcan, which is pretty much ideal. Wrong side mag changes are easy with the FS, as is shooting. The only control that isn't completly ambi is the CH, so I flip it CH side up and run it with my right hand if I'm shooting left handed. H |
