So I am about to purchase an MSAR STG-556. Yay! Two questions!

1. If I were to purchase the model with the 1.5x Optic, I realize this does not have the 9" Top Rail. My question is how does the 1.5x optic attach to the receiver? Is there a small 1913 rail underneath or does the scope mount directly to the receiver?

2. For those that do have the 1.5x optic - how do you like it? And (ok, my third question) does the reticle function in low-light or darker conditions?

Thanks for the help, as always.

I can answer #1. Rails and the optic are attached by 3 bolts. It's a pretty simple arrangement.

You might check out Ratworx, if you haven't already.

Scope mounts directly to top of receiver with 3 small bolts. There is no rail underneath. If you want to be able to mount something else on it you would need to remove the optic and buy and install a top rail.

Not very well.

I bought my E4 with the optic and I had a lot of issues. I sent it into MSAR Dave along with some problematic mags and I am still waiting on their replacements. I was given an STG rail to use in the meantime. You will find some people have had good success with theirs, but I didn't. If I could do it all over I would have passed on the factory optic, bought the cheaper railed version, and put the extra couple of hundred I spent on it toward a better aftermarket optic instead. If look in this bullpup section you will find lots of threads on the subject of optics/red dots, etc..  Just my 0.02.
Good luck,
Mav

Thanks for the info, Mav.

One thing I've considered is if I don't like optic, I figure I can sell it here and end up coming out ahead in the end. It just looks so fantastic with the optic. :)

Anyone else have other experiences with the optic?

Mine is on an E4.  Completely trouble free.  I am still going to replace it down the pipe with something a bit more modern.  It lacks when compared with current offerings in the optics world.  I am in no rush to change it out, just sometime in the future.  Right now I am happy with it and it looks right on my rifle.
YMMV

I too got a defective optic.   Won't adjust.  So I can't zero it.    From day 1 it didn't work.   Now I have a rail to tide me over.  Don't have the money for an optic so I'm SOL.   I've had my msar since december and barely shot it bc of the issues.  Wish I bought the railed version.  Though I look forward to the replacement optic I'm waiting on.  I need it.

Sounds like we got our rifles around the same time (got mine in December too). Now that Dave no longer works for MSAR, our optics might not ever get replaced. I put in a couple of calls this morning and left voice mails. I am also going to fire off some emails today. I will let you know if I receive any responses.

I guess I am in the same boat too.. Got my STG-556 yesterday, tried to get close to a zero at 25 yards and point of impact was at least 6 six inches above point of aim. I have turned the elevation knob about 50 times and nothing seemed to change on the scope.
