I have an option to trade for one, and i know very little about them. How do they compare to an MSAR. I am getting an msar friday (for the second time) so i'm wondering if the m17s is comparable.

Who here has one, and how do you feel about it?

They're heavy-ish, and most of them have a funky muzzle thread (post-ban) that will keep you from mounting a standard flash hider correctly.

Kurt's Kustom Firearms used to offer some pretty good mod services for it, but Kurt has passed away..

(rails, top rail to replace the handle, charging handles, lightening, etc)

It uses some AR small parts though, so most spares should be cheap

I have handled several M17's, and I think if you already have an MSAR you will be pretty disappointed.

The M17S was a good rifle for it's time. But with Kurt passing away and the fact that you have MSAR, Kel-Tec, FNH, and Steyr selling bullpups now the M17S is left to the dust bin of history.

Are they bad? No, not at all. But they're like Colt SP1s, pretty much it's how it comes out of the box. There isn't much you can do to it unless you have a really good gunsmith hack it up and make it pretty.

Right now you have the following choices.

MSAR STG-556

MSAR XM17-E4

FNH USA PS90

FNH USA FS2000

Steyr AUG A3 S/A

Kel-Tec RFB

Save your money and stick with your MSAR.

I like mine. There are other people who do work on these. Mine was done by a guy in AZ. The only thing I don't like about it is the trigger. The same guy is working on that too.

Pretty accurate also:

the pic below is the setup i'd be looking at... assuming 100% aesthetic condition as pictured with 6 mags, what would you say the value is?

With the Eotech, $900.  Nice looking rifle.  When you decide to trade it, give me a call.

Depends - trade 'what' for the M17s?  That one is actually pretty nice looking, but I would still probably not do it unless I had $900 or less invested in the trade item.

hahaha... you know me well.

I dunno if i'm gonna trade for it, but i like playing musical guns... it's a hobby

I was going to be trading my 6.8 diamond specter AR for it.. if it's only worth 900 with the optic, i don't think that'd be a good deal... especially since that's not a REAL eotech.. it's a bushnell

What he said. I owned an M17S a few years back. It's unique and definately not a piece of crap, but it can't compare to an AUG style rifle. Just my opinion.

I had one, but it was a lemon.

I liked it, had pretty good exterior ballistics.  I would have liked it more if it hadn't been a lemon.

The M17s was an absolutely amazing carbine in the time before Bushmaster discontinued her. Back then it was the ONLY bullpup that offered all the advantages of a bullpup (if you never held an M17s the balance of her is EXCEPTIONAL, even today) without the skyhigh pricetag. At the time she was readily available, there were no other bullpups under $3000. the best you could hope for was a preban AUG. The bullpup choice was either a $800 M17s or a $3000 AUG. But even when she was being produced she still suffered from being extremely ugly. Kurt was the only "plastic surgeon" who was able to make her presentable I know of, but was killed in a motorcycle accident IIRC.

So is she worth it? If it is for novelty/collector purposes, maybe. depends. For a quality bullpup? no there are better options available. Namely the MSAR.

I have one, like it.  I will be using it as my primary host for my AAC can when the stamp gets back!  (yes the trigger pull is kinda crappy)

i have one , i took in a trade deal back during the winter months it was all original .
i milled some slots did a trigger job added some rails on top and bottom , made a much improved charging handle , folding forward grip and 6X9 bipod i use the M17 for coyote hunting in the timber i use a reddot /green dot for open fields i use a 4x16 x50
so i call it coyote ugly

i have my own lathe & mill and do work on the M17s aswell .

A stock M17S is more of a historical curiosity than anything.  It's not that they are bad bullpups, but they are an outdated design; modern bullpups like the STG and RFB (and Tavor, if we ever get it) are better in every way, but that doesn't mean they it isn't worth getting one.  The biggest selling factor is that there are many individual rifles that have had extensive modifications to them, making for interesting and unique guns.  If you have access to a lathe and/or mill, the design also lends itself to being modified relatively easily, so you can get a stock one and "roll your own" flavor of bullpup.

Yup that is my rifle and I do all sort of mods.  You can view my web site at http://www.kmaerospace.com/M17s.html  I have a stock one that I will do the mod of your choice.  I am looking for a AR10 for a trade.  I have done several and as libra8 said I am working on a trigger job for this rifle.  I did the mod for libra8 as you can probably tell by the signature charging handle that was inspired by him.  RDTCU is incorrect, all of the M17s rifles come threaded 1/2-28 standard flash hider threads.  On the post ban you just have to shorten the barrel sleeve which I do for free if you have me do a mod for you.

srfnken:  A few years ago I saw a post where someone converted the M17s to a left hand shooter.  The made a left hand bolt, cut a new left hand ejection port and filled the right hand port.  Can you do this mod?  If so I would be interested in buying the M17s you have on your web site and having this mod done as well as one of your complete packages.

I was thinking more along the lines of the RFB, FS2000, and Tavor than the AUG, but despite the fact that the M17S was designed ten years later, the AUG is still the better rifle.

I will give you that! And it still looks cool and hi-tec! Way ahead of it's time but for that matter so is the AR15/M16's compared to all those AK's out there. But basically the M17 is an AR180 in Bullpup form. I owned 3 of them all good rifles very accurate but a little heavy but well balanced. Sold them only to fund other things.

Like most M17S stuff, it is a one off piece  and was done by the previous owner.
