I have always been intrigued by the Steyr AUG rifle, and had long thought I could never afford one.  So, I'm viewing Buds gun shop, and see the MSAR rifles for under 1000$ !!!!............My jaw nearly hit the floor.  I come to this site to glean info for my AR15's mostly, but now I'm seriously considering getting one of these.  Before I take the plunge, I have a few questions, and please bear in mind I'm totally new to these rifles:

1) Bud's has them for 982.00 sans optics, is this a good price?

2) Are these (from Bud's) first generational production runs that may have problems?

3) Do these take typical AR15 mags?

4) If not, what is magazine availability like, and normal cost?

5) From an AR15 afficianado, how would you characterize durability?

6) Is combat accuracy (3-5 MOA) @ 100 yards from the 16 inch barrel model possible?

7) Anything else I need to know (warnings/complaints/wanting to buy another/etc) ?

I'm really psyched by the prospect of owning one of these, and can't believe I have not stumbled upon this earlier.  I have never even viewed the bullpup portion of this site before!!!!

Please give me some insight before I place my order....THANKS

1) That's a good price for the earlier version STG that takes proprietary mags (I love the 42rd proprietary mag, btw) but Ratworx also has good prices so shop both and compare!
2) Someone correct me if I'm mistaken but these are later generation STG's at Bud's, the only real problem you might encounter is the old-style extractor which has a tendency to break (easy fix, contact MSARDave here and he'll take care of any problems you may have).
3) No, the later E4 version takes AR mags and they typically run $200-$300 more.
4) IMHO the STG proprietary mags are very rugged & reliable. The STG's magwell is wider so the mag body/feedlips can be thicker/stronger. The 42rd mag is just about perfect as you can do a quick visual check of rds remaining, you have 40% more ammo before reloading and I've found the extra length makes the mag easier to manipulate during reloads w/o resorting to Magpuls or Ranger Plates. Right now prices have been appx $14/ea (I paid $35+ for mine originally... )
5) Durability is good. I have personal experience w/4 different STG's w/a combined rd count of over 6K rds. The only broken parts I've seen are the bolt sleeve and the old-style extractor (none of my new-style extractors have broken). However, I think a spare parts kit should also include the usual stuff like firing pin w/spring, extractor rebuild kit, ejector rebuild kit, bolt sleeve and bolt spring.
6) Yes, easily if you and the ammo are up to it. I can consistently hit an 18" gong at 300m w/a 6.5moa dot offhand if I'm careful to do my part. The trigger's not as good as a match AR trigger but it does improve significantly over time and there are aftermarket non-permanent add-ons like the Trigger Lite and Trigger Tamer to reduce trigger pull weight.
7) STG's are tight from the factory, needing a couple of hundred rds to break them in properly. The takedown latch can be very tough to move at first but gets easier w/use. If you have a problem w/your STG or E4 contact MSARDave here and he'll take care of any problems you have (exceptional CS, my 2nd STG had FTE's right out of the box and they fixed it ASAP). The STG's optic rail isn't as good as the lower/longer E4 optic rail but you can install an E4 rail on an STG if desired. Care must be used when selecting your optic & mount to avoid snagging your fingers while working the left-side charging handle (on my RX30 shown I reversed its TA51 mount so the mount knobs are on the right and out of the way instead of on the left).

That's the basics, let us know if you have more questions and be sure to keep us posted!...

One of my STG's w/the E4 optic rail, Trijicon RX30, Magpul MBUS, 9" accessory rail w/Fenix TK11 taclight:

Identically equipped STG but w/the original std STG optic rail, notice the difference in length & height:

Tomac-

I love you.  Think I'll place my order in the A.M......So getting additional mags should not pose a problem?

Extra STG mags shouldn't be a problem at all, check w/Ratworx as well as Bud's for best prices. Whomever you order from will probably cut you a deal if you order mags along w/the rifle.
Keep us posted and we expect a range report w/pics soonest!

ETA- I added one other comment under "7" above and another pic showing the std STG optic rail for comparison.

A little more research indicates the model at Bud's has a "pinned compensator" which is NJ  compliant.  Does this mean it does not have an actual flash suppressor?....how else would this model be different?  I just want to make sure I know what I'm getting before I order!!!

THANKS!!

If it's the model I think you're referring to then, yes, that would be correct, no flash hider. I suggest giving Ratworx a call and see what models/prices/extras they have, CDNN recently had good prices as well.

Not all the guns at buds have compensators. If you look at the model numbers, the ones without a 'C' on the end have the standard tulip flash hider.

Just bought one from Bud's right before Christmas.

If you buy the rifle from Ratworx they toss in 5 30rd mags with it.  I doubt Bud's or anyone else is doing that.  Course the gun at Ratworx is about $1050 IIRC.

Ratworx has 30rd mags for $13 and 42 rd mags for $13.50

Buy 3 times what you think you need. They won't be this cheap forever.

I called and ordered a few more this morning. I don't really have the cash - but they are still honoring teh sale. And yes, they will be 3x the price soon.

If I don't get them now, I'll be ordering 1 at a time in a couple of months, and then paying shipping each time (what I did with my PS90 previously)

Well...........have you gotten it yet???

I'm looking at getting the same one you were probably looking at.

Can/does MSAR just make a 16" threaded barrel that we can put our own flash/brake on it???

The STG556 mags can't really be considered proprietary, since they will work in a Steyr AUG, and vice versa.  There might be a little tweaking involved, but it only takes a few seconds with a nail file.

Dave sent me a couple STG mags to try in my AUG A3, and they worked without modification, however they were a little tight.  A few seconds with a file and they fit perfectly and dropped free just like all of my Steyr mags.

Question #8 as I didn't want to make a new thread for a simple stupid question:

Can I remove the FH from a "C" Ban E4 and put on a normal AR Flashhider?  I wanted to go to a Vortex from this:

I believe only the E4's come with 5 mags. could be wrong tho. Im going to order an E4 very soon and plan on using my ACOG but i will be reversing the mount. I am also sending the barrel to ADCO to be cut down so with the muzzle device it will be exactly 16in and i believe the barrel has standard AR threads.

Thanks to everyone for thier assistance and advice.  Based on all the info provided, I placed my order with Rat Worx late last week for an STG556, railed gun (no optic) in tan!!.  And yes, they are including 5x 30 round mags.  The cost was 1050.00 plus 20.00 for shipping.  I'll post some pics as soon as I can....Thanks again to everyone for their help, now just need to decide on an optic.

It's probably blind pinned and silver soldered.  You'd probably bugger up the threads getting it off.
