I was looking at a cutaway view of an AUG and couldn't find any sort of recoil spring that would return the bolt carrier back into battery.  All the pictures I've seen show the carrier and the two guide rods, but no springs.  I assume they exist...if so, are they replaceable or don't they wear that much?

Recoil springs are in the guide rods but only need to be replaced every 6-10,000 rds.

Tomac.

That would be a great post. I was woundering the same thing. Where would we get spare parts (Springs) if we wanted to .

Same place you get all your AUG spare parts:  Pete.

They're *in* the guide rods?  I guess I'm not visualizing how they work...are they contained within the rods themselves?

Yes.  The stock has two long pins that slide inside the guide rod where the springs are located.

Great link!  Thanks.   What parts are interchangeable between the MSAR E4 and the AUG?

Next time you have your STG/AUG field stripped, examine the rear of the guide rods. You'll find you can depress them against the pressure from the internal springs. To replace the springs you have to unscrew the thrust pieces on the front of the guide rods. On the STG's they're attached w/red loctite so you'd need to soften the loctite w/heat before trying to remove them.

Take your rifle completely apart and just slip the bolt carrier into the stock. You can observe from the rear of the stock how the bolt carrier interfaces with the guide rods that are attached to the stock.

Tomac, sgtmj:  Thanks for the descriptions!  When I get my E4 (hopefully next week depending on how quickly it ships), I'll take a look at what you describe.

Is this an "every 10k rounds" change?

Sorry for all the questions...I'm fairly new on the mechanics of the rifle.

Not something to really worry about.  You start getting short-stroking and ftrtb, then replace the springs.
