Is carbon supposed to build up on the rod side of the piston ?  i would think the rings would keep the carbon out of there .

The rings do not stop everything.  Fire your STG at night and you will see some blast come out between the gas block and the front of the receiver.  It is nothing to worry about.

I just cleaned my rifle after 500 rounds of Black Hills. The gas piston was filthy. It cleaned up easily though.
