Im looking to buy a 556 and I love the look and feel of it and also I cant have an SBR here, but Ive heard remarks on there reliability. And Im not sure I want pay $1800 for a rifle that has issues.

So if you could tell me of youre experiences with this rifle and what you guys think.

Also Ive heard of issues with the msar mag reliability is this true?

From what I understand the reliability issues have all been worked out by MSAR. My STG is from the first run of OD STGs and has yet to have 1 malfunction. IMO if your getting an STG556 reliability isn't going to be something to worry about.

So the new Gen IV's are GTG?

I've got a 20-inch scoped Gen II with less than 500 rounds through it and it has never had a malfunction.  I trusted it enough to use it in the 2008 Fort Benning 3-Gun this past weekend and it worked perfectly when members of my squad had FTE's or FTF's with their AR-15 rifles.  MSAR also has a very good track record for customer service from what I have read on other forums.

I have personal experience w/3 STG's: 2 are mine and 1 is my son's.
My first is a Gen.III and it's been 100% w/brass-cased ammo right out of the box. W/Silver Bear steel-cased ammo I do get the occasional stuck casing every few hundred rds but this seems to be improving w/use. I have appx 1K rds through it to date.
My 2nd is a Gen.II and it had FTE's from the beginning. MSAR fixed it ASAP and so far (nearly 1K rds through it) it's been 100% w/both brass & steel-cased ammo. I did have a broken extractor at about the 500rd mark but MSAR sent replacements quickly and I'm currently testing this rifle for recurring problems (MSAR told me if it breaks any more extractors that it could be a timing issue so we'll see).
My son's is a Gen.II and has been 100% w/appx 300rds of brass-cased ammo.
Mags: All my 30rd mags (both black and amber) have been 100%. I did have the occasional FTF issue w/my first 42rd mag until I learned to tap the back of the mag after loading to seat the bullets against the back of the mag.
So far I'm happy w/both the rifle & MSAR's customer service but I'll keep testing my 2nd STG for extractor reliability.
HTH...

There you have it my man. Tomac is the product tester among we STG types. He has the optics options surrounded as well. Get one! Then get some!

There seems to be mixed experiences with reliability.  This is my experience:  Mine went back to MSAR one week after I bought it because the rifle had numerous malfunctions.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=43&t=261117

In speaking to MSAR after they received it, Dave told me that they "upgraded" the ejector and extractor and in addition, replaced the hammer pack.  When it was returned to me, exactly 7 days later, I took it apart.  I did not notice this earlier, but the bolt is date stamped 6/08.  I did not notice any difference with the ejector or extractor except maybe the "upgraded" extractor being a silver color.  The hammer pack looked no different to me.

My STG seems to be a GEN II with the bolt stop fence, flush cups and FA. My STG's serial number is 29xx.  I dont know when this year or last it was built. I wonder though, because it was shipped with the old and "not upgraded" ejector and extractor.

It is raining like HE!! here in PA, so I have not made it back to the range to try out my newly "upgraded" gun.  I hope the problems have been resolved.

My experience with the MSAR's gunroom customer service has been thus far!

The first 235 or so Limited Edition Gen 1 Black Stock STG 556's were recalled. I believe most of them have been upgraded since though if not all of them.

Other Gen 1 and Gen 2 rifles have had reports of issues here and there all of which have been resolved by MSAR.

Gen 3 and the new Gen 4 rifles I don't hear problems with and I try to follow this stuff pretty close.

The very first few 42 rnd. magazines had issues, but I haven't seen any complaint since then of the 42 rnd magazines and the 30 rnd magazines have all been good-to-go from the start.

MSAR has a warranty that they back pretty well. You pay the S&H costs to them, they fix your rifle if it has problems, and they pay the S&H cost back to you. Unless of course you damaged your rifle by doing something insanely stupid.  This is pretty much the gold standard for most the industry. Everyone who is reputable does the same thing.

By far the majority of MSAR STG owners have all reported they are pleased with their rifle's reliability. With any firearm you will see reports here and there of issues.

350 rounds through mine without issue.I know it's still early in the ballgame but I don't feel worried about it.
The only issue I had was with a 42 round mag.I couldn't fit all 42 rounds in it.40 would fit but when I tried to put in the last 2 rounds it felt like I was really trying to force them in without success. My other 42 round mag did not have this problem and took all 42 rounds.

I have a Gen IV and my dad, brother and I, fired between the three of us, over 600 rounds through it one weekend of extensive firing.  I used MSARs 42 rounders, MSARs 30 rounders, Steyr 30 rounders, and MSAR 10 rounder.   The ammo was all Remington.   We had no malfunctions of any kind.  I cleaned it prior to shooting, as it was new.  After a few more range sessions like this, I will have the confidence to call it as reliable as my AR's.  It takes quite a bit to make me really comfortable to say something is "reliable", but so far, I see no reason to not give that title to this platform.  I will say, the overall package is superior to my AR's, but time will tell the reliability of it.  Until then, my AR's will be my "go to" rifle.

Mine is super reliable and my go to rifle now. I was on the fence at first too because of the initial reliability issues. They have definately got it right now. My boss has one too and his is GTG as well.

I on the other hand will only have a "go to" rifle that I am the most comfortable with and have the most history with.  My AR is like a wife I have been married to for years, I know every part of her and how to get her to perform.  My MSAR however, is like the hot mistress, fun to take out, looks good, performs...so far....in short, I love my AR's the most, am most comfortable with them, but the MSAR is like a hot exotic blond, only time will tell whether she lasts as long as the wife.

The rain finally stopped here in NEPA and I made it to the range today to try out my "upgraded" MSAR STG.  If you recall from a few posts north of here, MSAR "upgraded" my bolt assembly with a new extractor, ejector and hammer pack.

Today my goal was to run the gun hard.  I wanted to run this rifle like my life depended on it!  I wanted to see this rifle perform without treating it like a baby. I  cleaned and lubed it up (wet like my AR's like it) and went to work.

I loaded eight MSAR 30 round magazines; two magazines each with Federal XM193, PRVI 55g FMJ, S&B 55g FMJ, and "another brand."

I then ran drills shooting pairs and triples at numerous targets at various ranges until four magazines were empty (112 rounds.)  The magazines changes were as fast as I could perform them.  With only a few minutes break to check my targets, I did the same thing again emptying the other four magazines (112 rounds.) I then checked my targets again.  All nice were hits made compliments of the Leupold Prismatic mounted on top!

I RAN THE RIFLE SMOKING HOT.  I had exactly 0 malfunctions.

Nuff said'

EDIT:  I just had to add a pic of mine.

GovM4:  How was the feel of the "new" trigger?  I am having the same issues you had, and the gun is boxed up and ready to go in for a checkup... Thing is, i am pretty happy with the trigger on mine at the moment and hope that i get a decent pack if they deem it in need of replacement.

I'll let you know when I get mine back. Mine went back last Monday, they recieved it Thrursday, repaired it, scoped it, bore sighted it and boxed it for shipment same day, I should have it back Tuesday or Weds.
I had the same issues as govm4

Awesome, thanks!  Lemme guess, you both have gen II's with the tulip FH and sn's begining in the 600 range?

Glad to hear no issues.  I have pretty much the exact set up, though mine is a black generation IV, with same optic.  How do you like your prismatic?  I love mine and find it ideal for the MSAR.
