I have this hand priming tool, bought back in 2007. Never could get it to feed primers, since the seating stem appeared to be too long. It is blocking the path for the primers to fall inline with the plunger and primer pocket (The handle is all the way out and the gate is open, no slop in the system.)

Contacted RCBS back in 2007 and they sent out new parts, large and small seating stems. They were the exact same length as the original parts. Still no solution, so I attributed this problem to operator error, and have been using the press mounted priming option ever since.

Decided today to take another look at this problem. Saw a thread on another site about the plunger being concave on both ends. Mine is concave only on one end.

I downloaded the manual, and it looks like there has been a part chance since then. I have two pieces (what I call a plunger and a stem), and the manual (items 3 and 4) shows only one piece.

Could someone check their tool and see if:

  1. they have two parts (plunger and stem)
  2. if two parts, is the plunger concave on both ends?

If so, I'm guessing that that is my problem, my plunger is concave only on one end. Just by eyeballing, concave on both ends would shorten things up and allow primers to pass. Thanks.

Mine is the correct length and 1 piece. I used it for Berdan priming. Never really liked this tool.

One end rounded, this end goes down. The end that goes up is flat to seat primers correctly.

Cut off a little to make it the correct length, make sure this end is flat and deburred.

I believe the original RCBS bench primer used a 2 piece primer shaft. Much better tool for seating Berdan primers.

Mine didn't have the shafts when I bought mine used, so I made one from the end of a long drill bit.

Thanks dryflash3. Confirms that there is a one piece version out there.

Anyone have a two piece where the plunger is concave on both ends?

I have one piece units for large and small primers. Came in a kit I bought two years ago. They work fine for me

I've had one for years and love it.  My biggest compliant is that the case holder rotates around and l have to slow down to orientate it to the proper position.

My plunger is cupped on only one end.  The cup goes down against the ball end of the linkage.  Or that's how it was assembled when l first took it apart.  The radiused end of the seater rod goes down against the flat top of the plunger.

That's how I assemble mine. Now I'm thinking that my plunger part might be out of spec since the seating stems they sent were the same length.

My parts measure:
plunger = 0.780"
seating stem = 1.868"

Anyways, I've sent an email to RCBS pointing to this thread. Hopefully they know whats up and I can get things working.

I'm at work now and won't be home for another 6 hrs or so.  I'll dig mine out and take measurements much later.

Do you have and have you read the instructions on setting it up?  It sounds like you need to perform the "aligning internal linkage" step.

Sure seems like the hard way to do something

Box it up, describe the problem, ship to RCBS, get working tool back in a couple of weeks.

Not sure how old mine is, but probably pre 2000.
It is concave on both ends.  Basically both ends look like the second photo.
Plunger measures .785"
Seating stem measures 1.8677"

Thanks ya'll. RCBS got back with me and should be fixing me up. Definitely with the combination of parts that I currently have, the plunger should be concave on both ends. That will let the seating stem sit into the cavity on one end and the linkage ball sit in the other end giving the proper overall length.

That would be the easiest way

I guess curiosity got the best of me and wanted to figure out why it didn't work out of the box.

I was wrong.  Mine is dimpled on both ends.

I'd say you got a Monday morning or last minute Friday afternoon piece that didn't get properly made.

Contact RCBS and they'll take care of you.
