I had a thread going a week or so ago about 45acp and 185gr bullets.  I've only shot 230gr plated so far but ordered up some Nosler185s and 200grn LWSC.  I've used Unique in the past, but for the last coupe years have been using Power Pistol with the 230gr stuff.  I'm thinking I might be better off with a different powder for these new bullets.  I'm not chasing velocity and prefer accuracy...800-900fps or whatever works best for these bullets.  The goal is an accurate load out to 25 yards.  What am I looking for?  Bullseye, 231, AA#5, or something else?

Favorite loads with these bullets?   I'm shooting regular 1911s.

My .45 ACP load is a Berry's plated 230 grain RN over 7.6 grains of Unique.  It yields about 800 FPS from a 5" bbl.

I just loaded up some 230 LRN over 5.0 of W231.  I haven't chronographed it, but the Hornady manual says that should be ~750 fps.
4/25/2017 2:58:22 PM EDT

Clays for the 200 gr SWC's and True Blue for everything else.
4/25/2017 3:16:32 PM EDT
[#4]
I'm using 200 gr LSWC with Clays.  4.2 gr IIRC.

Just a fudd with a pistol.  Don't shoot competitive and don't shoot anywhere near often enough.

Similar for me but with 5.0gr of HP-38.

I use  little more powder for about 800 fps but 231/HP38 all the way. Similar load with 200 gr SWC works as well or better.

I use W231 for all my handgun loads - revolver and semiauto.  I've tried others but no other was demonstrably better and some were much worse.

What is your load for 800 fps with 230 lrn or 200 swc?  I used the starting load from the Hornady manual and was working my way up.

From Memory, 5.3-5.5 gr 231 with 200 gr cast.

W231/HP-38, Bullseye and Red Dot should work great.

5.0 grains of WST with the Nosler or Zero 185 is  known bullseye load.

You can also experiment with VVn310

W-W 231.
5.7 gr with 200 gr sec.

Bullseye...been used in 45auto for over 100yrs.  4.5-5grns for 200-230grn bullets. Standard GI load was 5grns for 230grn bullets.

The Marine Corps load is 4.2 gr N310 with a 185 jhp loaded at 1.200".

3.9 gr of Bullseye is perfect for lswc bullets.

I've got good loads for other powders, but the two listed will be competitive in any bullseye match.

It is cheap too! Some folks do not like it and say it does not measure well.

Others are Win Super Target and Solo 1000 for cast and coated.  I'm not an expert on jacketed loading so I'll watch here a bit hoping to see what's good for the Nosler 185's.

CLAYS

WST

win231/HP38

Titegroup

3.8gr CLAYS over a 230gr is a affordable, accurate, feels soft, but makes "major" power factor for USPSA-IPSC or IDPA

Rob Leatham recommended this load, and I've used it for many years

it also has very little muzzle flash

4.0 gr Red Dot or Bullseye and any 185-230 gr bullet. Works well in my 1911's, Glocks, Kriss, and works well in my buddies Thompson SMG.

As you can see everyone has their favorite spotted puppy. The 45acp is one the mikey's of the reloading world, it will eat about anything. If you're looking for target grade accuracy you need to have a firearm capable of that accuracy. All shots have to be touching @ 50ft and 2" groups @ 25yds don't cut it.

That being said, you should look at powders/charges for other calibers when you setup your powder measure for the 45acp. Typically you can use the same powder/load for the 45acp/357/44spl. Don't know if you load for any of those calibers but whatever you decide to try take a look around and see if you can use the same powder/amount of that powder to test other caliber/bullet combo's.

My 45acp/target load, a 200gr swc bullet. When I setup to load the 45acp target loads I also load a batch of 38spl p+ loads using the same 3.8gr of bullseye.

I don't use/shoot 185gr bullets for the 45acp very often but when I do I like to use the same 5.0gr of wst as others have mentioned. 5.0gr or wst also does extremely well for 9mm target loads. My 9mm target load.

A # of pistol powder goes a long way, try picking a powder that can be used for several different calibers/loads.

Truth.  I use 7.6 grains of Unique for .45 ACP, 44 Special (loaded in Magnum cases for simplicity), and 45 Colt.

I didn't know you could chamber a 44 magnum casing in a 44spl revolver. But I've never tried it either.

Unique and Bullseye are my usual for 45acp. I've tried W-231. No complaints.

Let me clarify.  All my 44 revolvers are chambered for .44 magnum.  I have several different loads, but the one I use the most is a .44 special load (i.e. using 44 spcl data) that I load into magnum cases.  I use the same cases just to simplify logistics and avoid having to readjust my dies.

I've been loading off a big can of 700X for quite some time.   It's good with all bullet weights I've tried in .45acp.

I've also burned through alot of bullseye with great results.    I once tried W231 but it seemed to leave powder specks all over me IIRC.

The USMC load is sort of specific with respect to ultimate tweaking is with Win WLP and Win Brass.

You can almost run along side the bullets traveling to the target.

To me I have had good experiences with 231/HP38, TG, Universal Clays, N310, and Bullseye.
Burned up a whole lot of 231/HP38 with 200gr HG68 Clones Federal Primers

700x for me as well. First powder I could get when I started reloading pistol and still have several pounds.

Another "sleeper" 45 ACP powder is 800X. I got tired of reading about how much Ken Waters liked 800X, so I bought some.

Ken was right again.

I moved to WST when I couldnt find Bullseye during the colder times...

I am glad I did. WST seems cleaner burning. Fast powders won't win any velocity awards but they are cleaner in a suppressor.

Another great thing about WST is that you can see it easier in a case (even if you don't wet tumble). It's a white powder. Meters better than some others mentioned above including Unique.

I like faster powders for 45 acp. I am a Bullseye fan because it cleans off easily, meters well and is easy to find, even though it may be a little dirty.

It always is surprising the range of slow to fast burn rate powders people like for 45 ACP. I have tried many of the powders mentioned and found they work well. I have never tried the slowest powders for 45 ACP because they give too much velocity in smaller calibers. I will have to breach the slower powders to see if there is something I am missing.

In my testing the other day, 5.25 gr of W231 with a 230 gr RNL bullet yielded 779 fps from a 5" barrel.  So, yes, about 750 fps for 5.0 gr.

Just wanted to add that I've been using TiteGroup lately too.

As you can tell from the replies there are probably as many good powders for 45acp as there are bullets.

I like to say that about my facial hair before I shave it off... "not white yet.. just light gray".

My point is that it's easier to see in even dark cases than other powders so it helps with older eyes.

W231 or HP-38

Simply because the powder seems to be the magical powder of the handgun world, nearly works for every caliber.

5gr of 231 under a plated 230gr RN is my dedicated plinking load for 1911's

Well I haven't got around to buying any new powder yet.  I did load up some of the 185 Noslers and 200gr lwsc with some Powder Pistol.  They functioned just fine.  Accuracy went to the 185s.  Group size was about 20% smaller for me over my 230gr plated Extreme load.

I still need to play around with it some more with a different powder.

I've used Super Field.  It keeps the pistol cleaner than W231 but the cleanliness comes at a price - it produces more smoke than W231.  It was noticeable outdoors but not a problem.  Indoors the extra smoke was also noticeable but tolerable.

Neither WSF nor W231 produces anywhere near as much smoke or residue on the pistol as Unique (which is in a class by itself for those).

Ultimately, I chose W231 over SF.

I've used W231 at night in total darkness - muzzle flash and smoke in the high intensity flashlight beam were very low.

Your gun will tell you what it likes.

With that said, almost every load I've tried with fast powders in .45 1911s has been at least decently accurate, and most of them more than decent.  Titegroup, Bullseye, and Clays have all worked well for me.  I've also gotten really good results from Universal even though it's more a medium powder.  I've had mediocre results from 231 and don't care for it.
