I pulled out my Enfield Webley Copy this afternoon and hand fitted a piece of 38 SPL brass in the cylinder to see if it would fit.  I knew before that the case is too long to fit even without the projectile.  My question is this;  Can you cut a 38 SPL casing down to 38 S&W length and use those to reload 38 S&W rounds?

I believe I've heard of that being done. Same with 9mm to .380

Could be wrong though

.38 special is smaller in diameter then .38S&W and even if you turn it down, it tends to split in .38 S&W cylinder chambers.

No need to try to make 38 Special work in your Webley/Enfield.  38 S&W ammunition and brass is still available from many sources.  Matt's bullets even has a pretty faithful reproduction of the 200gr hemispherical round nose bullet used in the old Mk I ammunition for sale as just bullets for reloading or as loaded ammunition.

Thanks for all of the replies.  I just now remembered that the projectiles are .359 for 38 S&W so the brass for .357 would probably be too small and split when fired.  Thanks for the suggestions for the .38 S&W projectile source.  I will look that up.  The cheapest brass seems to be the loaded ammo from Privi Partisan ammo.  I was planning on shooting that and use the brass for reloads.

Bullets for 38 S&W are actually .361.  I did similar bought some PPU and Magtech and shot it up in my two Top Breaks (Webley and Iver Johnson).  As for factory ammo I thought the Magtech was a little better but not as cheap  I then reloaded it for my Webley using Matt's 200gr bullet.  Managed to get it going a blistering 600 fps from my Webley.  Slaps steel plates very nicely.

I reloaded it on my Dillon 650 XL. Had to open up a 38 Special shell plate just a few thousands with a Dremel and a fine sanding wheel, still works fine for 38/357. Couldn't find dies for my 650XL in 38 S&W so I used a old 38 ACP (AKA 38 Super) die to size the brass.  It is .001 under size but works well, sort of like a Lee under-sizing die for 38 S&W.  Used regular Dillon 9mm dies for the rest of the stations; bell, seat, and crimp.  On the crimp station I never actually get to the crimp part of the 9mm die, but the tapered body of the 9mm dies does a nice taper crimp on the case removing the flare from the bell/powder station.

Thanks!  I need to get an extra seating die insert and modify it to fit the hemispherical round nose better so I don't leave that ring around them.  Does not effect their performance in anyway but it would look better without that.
