I've got a good accumulation of scrap brass. All separated, brass, lead, steel, etc. I've been told to take it to a scrap metal dealer for a few $$. Only problem is that there is a few live primers mixed in. No loaded shells, but a few primers.
How do I de-activate these? I'm told that WD 40 will kill them, but I don't think the metal dealer will be happy with oily brass. Fill the tub with water? But some primers are pretty good at being waterproof. And does anyone know what scrap brass is going for these days. Whatever I get, it will be better than the rubbish man. I cast, so most of the scrap lead is dross. Some polymer coated bullets. Help, suggestions and comments welcome. cap |

Take it slow and gentle, I have decapped a few and haven't set one off yet (knock on wood). |

You will get much more money selling them on the Equipment Exchange of this site than any scrap dealer will offer. Unless the brass has been worn out by reloading this is the way to go.
Simply look at what others are selling theirs for and match their price. The buyer pays shipping. |

Deformed, squished, split, etc. But I'll sort thru it again. I know some of it is simply odd calibers (odd meaning something I don't shoot) and will list it. How many is too few to list? cap [email protected] |

Even slightly split 5.56 brass would have possible value to a 300 blk guy.
Let me ask you this, and this is NOT a offer in any way, but how much do you really have? Metals are low right now, so I would sit on it. I asked our metals guy at work who shows up when called and pays real money, and he said he thought it was about .41 a lb. You have to remember, he does everything, including the driving to me. I dont have but a little, real scrap. I bag up by caliber, what I dont use, and toss the bags in a bucket. Someday I will run into someone who needs it. |

Scrap metal usually brings the highest amount when it's pure with no other alloy in the mix. Call and ask the scrapper if this is the case with brass cases. I'm sure nickel cases mixed in won't go well either.
You can remove the primers with a lee universal decapper. Just wear eye protection. |

Some place cry about firearm brass.. I told fella I "could take it back and make it look like machine shop debris"... made him mad..
Metal prices been way beyond "in the dumpster" for last couple yr.. I been sitting stuff for a good while now.. may have to take up smelting aluminum into ingots along with brass,, but I'll wait it out. Have a gallon jug full of primers too,, they didnt want to give anything for brass cups and anvils,, stuck pocket magnet in jug and the plating stuck to magnet,, I walk out with my jug |

As already mentioned scrap prices are down right now if you can just sit on it.
Before going through the trouble of finding the live primers and either removing or firing them, which can also be done safely by several ways, call your scrap dealer and ask if they would be an issue.Explain that there is no live ammo. You never know if you don't ask. Motor |
