This will be my first time loading 308, I've got an Armalite AR31 target 18" barrel bolt gun and am looking to work up some loads for it.
I have the following- Varget, Win 748, 1x fired LC range brass, Rem 9 1/2"BR large rifle primers, and Hornady 168 gr zmax bullets. I've been scouring the internet trying to find load data based around the Amax bullet and have found people are getting the best (most accurate results) when going over the max load with varget (44.0 gr Hornday 9th edition). I'd be very appreciative of anyone who can help me out with working up a load for this rifle, thanks guys. |

Start with the book minimum load and work up from there in small increments. Just because an over-max load load works in someone else's gun doesn't mean it won't blow up your gun.
I've havent started loading rifle yet but from what I gather, the best accuracy seems to be somewhere around middle of the road to slightly warm loads. Accuracy seems to drop off with some combinations as your get near max. Also, most 223 powders will work fine in 308. |

Good advice above except for the "blow your gun up" part.
There is no reason to unduly terrify someone. Rifles are proof tested at least 20% over max so while it is possible to get over pressure signs in .308 Win 1 or 2 grains over published max you are not going to blow your gun up. Also use as many sources as you can find. It's been my experience that some manuals are a lot more conservative than others. Hornady's latest manuals "seems" to be there most conservative ever but It's not with every caliber so compare as much data as you can. Motor |

43.0 grains of WW-748 is a known accurate load in Lake City brass shooting Sierra 168 grain Match Kings.
It's within .5 grains of maximum with those bullets. Work up to it with your bullets. Lake City brass reaches maximum pressure with 2.0 whole grains less powder when compared to Winchester commercial brass. |
