In looking at the .357 /.38 rounds I see they have .356, .357, and .358. Talking 125 grain if that matters.

What is the best choice for plinking/defense carry practice with my j-frames and 2.5" 357 magnum pistols?

I've got 6k 9mm bullets that are sized at .356 and am wondering if those may work. I think the stock I have now would not, becuase they are 115 grains but if I could just order a lot of .356 for both 9mm and .357 loadings it'd be nice to do so.

If your buying jacketed bullets, .357.

Cast bullets are normally sized .358. Some revolvers will prefer .359.

I've never tried .356 bullets in my 357's.

Interested in the follow on answers.

Zombie coated 9mm come in 356, 357, and 358. 125 grain. Since it looks like I'll be trying their 30 Cal,  I was thinking of ordering the 9mm in what you are suggesting....  A 358...  For my 357 work.

 Yes they work

In a 38 and 357 I have used FMJ and Jacketed HP looking for a powder puff load for a female shooter
just starting out ( very light recoil )
In that search I tried bullets that were 357, 356 and 355 ( FMJ and JHP )
All worked very well, except for a worn out 357 ( old police gun )( the barrel had a lot of wear ) and
the owner said it had lost its accuracy ( with 38s and 357s )
I tried 3- 38s and 4- 357s, 1 1/2 barrels and 6 inch barrels
found an accurate powder puff load with REM 102gr HP for a 380 ( 356 dia. )
 I latter, on request, worked up a load for a carry 38 snubby ( 1 1/2 inch barrel) ( nickle case, nickle primer and 9mm  115gr WIN. Silver tips ) ( 355 dia. )
Also on request I worked up a Load for a 357  6 inch barrel ( nickle case, nickle primer and 9mm 147gr Win Silver Tips ) ( 355 dia. )
 ( I did add a Cannelure for a role crimp on the 355s ( 9mm ) and the 356 (380 ) )

 All very accurate

38 special /357 mag bullets are .357" in jacketed bullets, .358" in lead casted or lead  plated bullets.

9mm/380 bullets are .356" in jacketed, and .357" in lead casted or lead plated bullets.

.356" jacketed is .38 super. .355" is 9mm.

Would tend to agree with you, but if you slug some 9mm production barrels, they need .356" bullet, instead of .355", to fit the bore correctly.

The dead give away on the 9mm barrels on some rigs, when you try to shoot cast bullets through the barrel, and end up finding that they will shoot best with the cast bullets sized to .357" or even.358" instead.

I like a good crimp groove on my 38 & 357 magnum bullets

these days there's a lot of good coated bullets on the market

SNS
MBC
BAYOU
etc

That's one thing my lot of Acme 9mm don't have...  A crimp groove.

I see the zombie bullets do. I'm digging the green too. Haha.

MBC seems so expensive compared to the others. Is there a reason for that?

I haven't and probably won't be using .356" bullets of any type in my .357/38 pistols.

But if you fallow the cast bullet forums you will find that many of us are using .358" cast bullets in both 9mm and. 357/38.

Even though my 9mms slug .355" they shoot the .358 cast bullets great.

I'd stay away from any jacketed 125gr bullets, too many problems with them. The 125gr lead bullets are longer bodied and easier on the forcing cones.

Myself, I'll stick with the 140gr to 160gr hp's for my snub nosed revolver and 357's.

The other thing to look for is the bigger the hp, the slower it needs to go to perform. Hence, the top 2 on the left do their best in the 800fps to 1000fps and the bottom center loves 1300fps+.

I've been using factory 125 gr jacketed in my 38/357 revolver for years with no trouble.

The 125gr 357mag rounds have a reputation for flame cutting top straps and cracking forcing cones at magnum velocities.
