So I load and shoot lots and lots of 12 ga lyman 525 gr slugs, mostly with a hefty portion of blue dot  as listed in the Lyman manual.

This has me wondering how much pressure a shotgun can take and what effect different wads and hulls have on the pressure.

Is it possible that modern ammo and load data will never go over black powder pressure levels but modern shotguns are capable of much more, the same way that 45LC loads and data are kept low?

The velocities I have seen for the 525 over blue dot are pretty stout. My shoulder couldnt take it. I had to pull a bunch of 525 slugs over Longshot. Too much for me.

Reason I say this.. Is your goal to go over max for modern guns? If so, you are better man than me. Velocities over listed for 525gr slug would likely kill me before my guns. If you are not getting velocities you need with Blue Dot, try Longshot.

Old guns.. I dont know if modern guns can handle more pressure but max pressure for 12 is pretty low (12k or so - your manual should have it). With 12ga slugs, I focus on velocity for the 525. My shoulder really liked Unique (slowest) but when I couldnt find anymore, I tried longshot.. then switched to WSF which falls in between.

Modern wads for 525 have nothing to doneith pressure. Theybwere selected based on fit. Pedals have the right thickness and length to fit the slug perfectly. The wad bases are just long enough to fit perfectly for the powder choice leaving little room and perfect crimping.

Don't chase pressure, go for velocity you need. There are plenty of powder options and velocity range is huge with the different powders. All the powders worked great in my Vepr and Saiga...

The metal in the barrel may  not handle pressure over the proof load PSI. Shotgun actions are weak, compared to a bolt rifle. But custom slug guns have been built on bolt actions. Recoil would be like a double rifle. Not something most shooters (me) would like to shoot. Good question, that i dont have the answer too.   http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/publications/download/ANSI-SAAMI-Z299_2-Shotshell-Approved8-31-2015.pdf

I suggest loading using published data.

The safety margin is not there if you going to explore hot experimental loads.

Does anyone know of a lab that will pressure test ammo for a reasonable price since there is no way to accurately measure outward pressure signs of a shotgun hull

Ballistic Products might yet.

I contacted hp white and they advised me that the cost for testing was out of my price range, but they would do it
