After years of reloading and now with my brother's components added, I find that I have an abundance of 7mm bullets. Yeah I still have my .280 Mountain Rifle and my boy has a 7mm Mag but it would be more fun to shoot them in something like a AR platform.
So is there a 280 BO caliber or something similar? I suppose maybe a AR-10 in 7mm-08 of something would be possible too but something made on the .223/5.56 case would be better. Motor |

not a .223 case but how do's the 7MM Valkyrie AR out of a AR15 sound
It is designed around the 140 class of bullets which should be pushed to 2700-2800 fps from a 24" barrel. Most 150 and 160 class will also be able to run in it with the 160 sierras being able to run at 2.25 oal so they will work perfectly in 300 black out mags. Estimates are for 2600 fps from the 160's. 120 class bullets should be in the 2900-3000 range and the 110's in the 3000-3100 range |

Ok. So the 7mm TCU would fall right in with those. I'll have to see if there are any AR uppers offered in it.
I also would have to guess then that if loaded subsonic you could call it a 280 BO or 280 whisper or whatever. Thanks guys, Motor ETA: I did some searching and it appears that the TCU is not a good option because of the OAL. This also seems to answer for me the question why the 300 BO case is shorter. So I guess a 280 BO would have to be made. |

So I guess a 280 BO would have to be made. Since the 300 blk was designed to use the stock 223 mag, the case was shortened so that the bullet ogive of .250 would sit at the mag bump. The 223's neck is .250 and sits at the bump. That's why the full length version (Wilson 7.62x40) has to have special mags. |
| I've owned a couple 7mm TCU's, never could get the velocity I wanted with 120gr bullets out of a 21" barrel. The OAL would be too long for an AR platform (unless you went AR10), and then it would be pointless. As far as a subsonic 7mm goes, it too would kind of be pointless...you are stuck with 195gr and lighter bullets at 1000fps, whereas you can get 240+ gr projectiles out of the .300 Whisper (and brass is everywhere). Plus, the .300 still makes a better parent case for 120gr bullets, as you can get better velocities with the larger diameter case. |

Thanks guys. All very informative stuff. My brother tells me be has a "96" Mauser action action laying around. Looks like it may be time to build something on it. Motor Maybe go completely the other way with a bolt action build. What about building a .28 Nosler, if the Mauser action can handle it and if reamers and loading dies are available. Standard length action, non-belted case, but I've not explored what bolt mods might be needed, though. It's a fat case based on the .404 Jeffery African big game cartridge. Think 160 grain high BC bullet at a screaming 3300 fps! I am a .280 Remington guy. Have three of them and a couple 7mmn Rem Mags, too, but like the .280 because its performance is almost indistinguishable from the 7mm Rem Mag under virtually all real world conditions, but with less recoil, less powder. Bullet drop at 400 yards is what difference, only one inch? The .28 Nosler is currently the hottest 7mm on the market. Ballistic improvement is enough of a step up to justify a build. |

Interesting for sure but we were thinking maybe something simple like a 7mm-08. Motor Not sure a 96 Mauser action will be up to 7mm-08 lever pressures, most (IIRC) were only good for standard 7x57 pressure levels. The 98's get you into the higher pressure stuff, though... |
