2 223 brass sort or not to sort. 3 do you anneal after every time or second or third ? |

I sort to headstamp and to cull out the FC cases. 3 do you anneal after every time or second or third ? New cases or once fired cases no, I let them go 5 cycles total. Pickups I anneal then load. Talking bottleneck cases. |

I only sort pistol brass by number of times fired and whether it is my own brass from factory ammo or if it is range pick-ups. If you have enough of it, I would sort by headstamp and number of times fired. For both rifle and pistol, sort thru it to cull the crappy brass if you get range pick-ups. And remember to never trash brass....get a 5 gallon paint bucket to keep by your bench to save the crappy headstamps or damaged cases to take to the recycler and profit!!!! |

1. Just pull the lever. If you load enough quantity, you can sort it out later for a match or a day's practice.
2. It's handy to have sorted brass at the range, or marked brass, so you can pick out your fired cases from all the other cases a true brasswhore is going to pick up. Then you may be able to treat your brass differently than the new brass you pick up. 3. I don't anneal presently. If I start shooting a lot of long range precision or precious brass I may do it but it's not worth the time and money considering all the free brass and cheap surplus I've gotten. If my brass gets worn I have surplus ammo to fire to get more cases in .223 and 30.06. |

I sort pistol mainly because I get so much of it I can be picky about which headstamps I reload. Have had some issues with differing case wall thickness between headstamps. |

Federal .223 brass used to have thin case webbing, but isn't an issue anymore with newer production stuff. I have thousands of pieces of once fired FC .223 brass- but all are from the last 2 years. I load 200 rounds at a time for my .223 bolt action using FC brass, 55gr Nosler BT, 8208 XBR, and Fed 205M primers. These 200 pieces of brass just got loaded for the sixth time. No loose primer pockets, no case head separation, etc. These loads chrono at ~3150 fps out of a 20" barrel. If you look at the various FC .223 brass out there, there is a lot that is made in the Lake City plant but stamped FC and has various other stamps as well. I'll take all of that I can find! |
