In reference to this graphic thread, I started checking out the decapping rods on my dies, with the intention of getting plastic caps for all of my dies, almost all of which are RCBS or Hornady.
RCBS's standard decapping unit seems to be larger than a #10 machine screw size, though it is definitely 32 threads per inch. Hornady's rod is bigger than that, but not nearly 1/4", and with their shallow threads I wasn't quite able to verify the threads per inch. Does anyone have the actual size/thread for these parts? The kind of plastic caps I'm looking for are kind of flexible, but I want them to stay put when I put them on, so they kind of need to be "close" to the right size. |

I used a hole-gauge on the two brands' rods. The RCBS rod is 3/16" in diameter, while the Hornady stem is 13/64 (probably more like 7/32 but turned down for the "Zip spindle" profile).
The covers are sold (mostly) by screw size, which is why I was thinking in this direction. Fuel line is a good idea, since it will stretch as needed to fit, but now I have an idea of what size fuel line to use. Glorified, I just want to keep from gouging my hand on these stems. I'm not looking for a finger grip or anything. I'm not sure what you were thinking about with your advice. Of course this whole exercise has also made me rethink how things are laid out on my bench, so I will be planning out how to avoid reaching over the press anyway, but considering my track record (and the scars that illustrate it), I'll also be putting something over those stems to keep from hurting myself. And almost certainly it will be something like fuel line - a couple of feet of that stuff should take care of all my dies and then some! Thanks for the suggestions, folks! |

The threaded portion is too long, it could be shorter is what I meant. Yes, it could be shorter, that's a good point. But it would be a royal pain to modify ALL my dies. And as wonderful as RCBS and Hornady's customer service is, I think that would void the warranty, too. Much simpler to me to keep them as they are and just do something to keep from hurting myself. |
you could try vacuum line caps. Available at most all auto parts stores. They come in a mulitude of sizes.

Moar professional looking I agree, much better. Different colors helps too, though O'Reilley's all seem to be black. But this is a great idea, and I think I'll go with this. Between the different brands of dies, I should be able to get everything managed without spending much money. Thanks! |
