I am looking for bullets that have a BC of .350 or higher that can be stabilized by a 5.56 with a 9 twist barrel.

So far I have found the Hornady 68 gr BTHP, #2278 and the Sierra 69 gr Tipped MatchKing, #7169.

Any others?

Many times, barrels listed as. 9 twist (or any other twist) aren't.

I've got a Savage 1:9 that's a 1:8. It stabilizes 77s.

Test your barrel with the cleaning rod trick.

The bullets you selected are great. I love 77s, but I could use the ones you listed for sure.

69 gr Sierra's are the heaviest my 1 in 9 will stabilize.

Your going to have to try out your barrel to see if it stabilize 75/77 gr bullets.

This doesn't work for you, consider changing barrel to 1 in 7 twist. Not hard to do if your handy.

Upper mounted in bench vice tool, gas tube just installed.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm guessing that there are not any other bullets that meet the criterion?

It is all well and good to do the math and work the tables while you are working towards whatever goals you desire but remember that they are just guides and numbers don't always reflect real life situations.

In other words , use the numbers but in the end it is how the things shoot in your gun

Barrel Length can also affect stability ( as a result of added velocity increasing the RPM of the bullet ) ... how long of a barrel do you have ?

That's what I was going to ask.
Try some 77's, what's the worst that could happen?

The barrel in question is a Bushmaster, 5.56, 1:9 (marked, haven't measured it), chrome lined, HBAR, 16" long.

I would probably avoid bullets much heavier than 70 grains due to the resultant velocity reduction.

I will be shooting offhand at up to 500 meters and am looking for less wind deflection at the longer distances than a 55 gr FMJBT would have.

At 200 and 300 meters I can work out the windage ok. At 500 meters it would be nice to have more like 30" of deflection per 10 MPH of wind as opposed to 50". I also shoot a 385 meters and a reduction in wind deflection would be appreciated. I would continue to shoot the 55 gr FMJBT at 200 and 300 meters and a better bullet for 385 and 500 meters.

In the future I may opt for a longer barrel, maybe 20", but would still want to stick with bullets in the not much more than 70 gr range.

They don't have the BC you want but I'd bet a dollar if you bought a big box of Nosler 55 grain Ballistic Tips, they'd do most of what you want.

This, they work very well in my 16" 1-7 barrel, and load to magazine length.

Standard (non-tipped) 69 grain Match Kings have been consistently great in every rifle I've ever run them through. My loads are going 2550 fps from 16" barrels. 2750 fps from 20". Sierra claims .339 +/- B.C. but that depends on conditions and velocity.

Velocity is irrelevant IMO. 77's only travel around 2450 from my 16" barrels, 2600 from my 20".

I develop loads that are safe, accurate and reliable. A bullet that has a higher B.C. isn't necessarily going to be more accurate from your rifle. A 16" barrel automatically limits range in a 5.56mm rifle.

My best groups have always come from 52/53 grain SMK's even when fired from 1/7 twist barrels. They won't buck the wind at distance, but they hammer up close.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if the Sierra 69gr MK was all I could get for long range target use. The new tipped ones may even be better.
