Anyone doing this? I couldn't find varget at the store so I grabed CFE .223
Right now I only have the nosler book, contains no data on this powder. Shooting 168 gr hornday BTHP Fed once fired brass Cci large rifle primers Can anyone guide me? The hodgdon website only lists two loads with very different starting loads Thanks team |

Thanks! I should just buy the damn hornady book. I have the nosler book and was just going to snaps some pics of the pages I needed from the hornady book at the store but they are shrink wrapped.
Quite a large spread from low to high charge wise, I wonder why that is |

Quite a large spread from low to high charge wise, I wonder why that is I really like the Hornady 9th... great info. Charge weight is pretty wide. Not sure why... For 223, I love CFE223 for 77's. Got to run them at high end to get accuracy. I have not run 308 with it yet.. my friend loves it for his Nosler 168 HPBT. Not sure his charge weight. If it were me, I would start at mid range of the Hornady data. But do what you feel is safe... I know there are 20 people here who would beat me for giving that advice ("Start at starting load!!!") But starting loads are rarely where I end up.... For my C&R's and antiques, I normally start and stop at starting loads. For modern firearm, there is no need IMO. Most of the time, you won't cycle a semi-auto with starting load so why bother??? |
| I tried CFE 223 in 223, 22-250 and 308. I was looking for a powder that would meter well enough to progressively reload bulk ammo for plinking. It worked fairly well for me but I haven't bought any more and have instead began using TAC for that purpose because at my LGS at least, it's $25 less per 8lb jug. |

I have loaded CFE 223 in my 150gr FMJ w/c Hornady loads for my SIG 716.
I used the Hodgdon manual for data. I went closer to their high end and had some serious over pressure. Took me a few tried to figure out 47.5gr was good for 2700fps. I like it. meters great and SDs were very good. In my opinion this powder may not be quite the match grade powder Varget is, but it's not too far off. Probably one of the best ball powders I know now. I will be trying it in 168gr loads too as soon as I buy some more bullets. |

Careful with the Hodgdon data for CFE223 and the 308 Winchester. It was very hot in my Keltec RFB and my Savage 10, even with the starting loads I was getting bolt marks on the casehead and flat primers. I'd start at 10% down from the max, and work up. What LaserBait said. I had pressure signs, including a blown primer, with 47gr behind a 168gr Match HPBT. According to the website this should have been just above a starting load. I haven't messed with it since but may try it in .223 or 6x45 loads. |
