Do they suck in everything or just .223/5.56
Just picked up a .44 mag and the first box of shells I got is federal
On inspection they look fine but I've only fired / cleaned half a box so far

I'm new to reloading, but I can speak for fed .308 brass.  After cleaning up some once fired brass I just de-capped, I notice about 25% of them have a ring aroud the case, close to the head.  I've come to learn this means the brass has stetched.  My first batch of 20 worked great, but I've put this twice fired brass aside, possibly to just scrap or load maybe just once more.

Hope this helps

As a rule Fed handgun brass is good to go. I have not loaded any 44 mag in a long time but I have loaded a bunch of 45 ACP, 38 Special, and 9mm with no issues.

The Federal .45acp brass I have is all good stuff, and I've not had any problems with it.  The Fed .223 brass on the other hand... not so much.

Looking great does not mean anything.  Federal brass has always been crap (for the 30 years I've been reloading, anyway).

Federal rifle brass is garbage.

Federal pistol brass is good to go. I have no problems using it in any pistol caliber I load for - but .44 mag is not one of those.

I only load .45 and have about 2500 cases of various head stamps in rotation at any one time.  Federal brass is good.

They have a special at Midway.....a brick of  Fed. .22 and 80 rounds of  American Eagle .556.  I orderd some just before I noticed this anti Federal thread, mainly because the price was right, and I heard that that .556 brass was most likely LC brass, since Federal makes LC brass for the military these days......and I needed to lessen the shipping hit for a small order I needed badly.

I was right, the head stamps say "LC" with the Nato circled cross and date.  I'm pretty sure that brass is perfectly fine.  The Federal .22 brick came with brass plated lead hollow points....also something I'm not worried about.

I'm not refuting anything, just saying that there is Federal rifle brass that might just be Okay.

You are correct, LC brass is fine - some of the best you can get actually.  LC brass is not FC brass.  Federal does not make LC brass, they just have access to it, and use it in their 5.56 labelled ammo.

In 5.56, all XM193 and XM855 will be LC.  Anything marked .223 will be FC brass, I think.  There is also military FC brass, but I don't know if that differs from their commercial cases?
