I loaded up some 82 gr Bergers and 80 gr Berger VLDs to work up a load for the 600 yard line today.

LC brass, Rem 7 1/2 primers, 30 off the lands as measured with the Hornady tool.  Wylde chambered 20" AR.  I put a scope on it for the load workup and shot from a rest.

Started with the 82s at 21.5 gr, but I didn't finish because I blew a primer at 22.1, and looking back at the 21.8 loads more closely there were a few with cratered primers.  To that point the groups were meh, around 1 MOA with the odd flyer.  Went home and pulled the rest.

Alliant lists 22.7 as their "recipe" for 80 gr Sierras, albeit with Federal brass and primers.  I am a little surprised that I couldn't even get into the 22 range.

I didn't chrono any of these but I'm concerned that if I go back and start over at 19 or 20 grains, even if I find an accuracy node, the velocity might be too low to be worthwhile.

Anyone out there having good results with these bullets and AR-Comp?

Thanks.

What exactly was your Overall Length ?

It worked out to 2.31 for the 80 VLDs and 2.30 for the 82s.

In this barrel, bullets seated to about 1.840" (to ogive) touch the lands.

I've read some people are seating these bullets out to 2.45" or 2.50" OAL but I'd be jammed well into the rifling like that.

Your limited OAL length is why you can't get into 22gr range. That 22.7 gr  Max load from Alliant is for a 2.550 Oal.

One thing that kinda peeves me about Alliant's data on their site.  The charges they give you are MAX charges, and should be worked up to.  There is a disclaimer about it on their main page of the reloading guide:

USE THIS DATA WITH ALLIANT BRAND POWDERS ONLY.

REDUCE RIFLE AND HANDGUN CHARGE WEIGHTS BY 10% TO ESTABLISH A STARTING LOAD.

DO NOT EXCEED THE LOADS DISPLAYED ON THE SITE OR ALLIANT'S RELOADERS GUIDE.

That's fairly standard any time only one powder charge is listed.

True, but I can easily see a novice reloader reading the recipe page and assuming that charge is what they should just go with. It doesn't even specifically label it as a "max" charge on the individual recipe pages.  If you miss the disclaimer on the front page you might not know.
