Hornady 8th edition shows H-4895 in the specific M1 Garand data section for use with 150-155 grain bullets.

Does anyone have IMR-4895 data for the M1 Garand using 150-155 grain bullets?

Thanks

First place to look:
http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

I have had good luck with 47 grains or IMR 4895 under a 150 grain quality bullet.
Don't load hot for these old guns, they aren't making anymore.  They will break!

Read here...although some are using 49 grains and that seems a bit hot.

The IMR data is online at their website too.

They can take hotter loads (not that I would do it) but you must remove the gas cylinder plug which will render the gun as manual loading only.

I have muzzle velocity versus powder charge weight data (chronograph data) H4895 and IMR4895 data using the CCI#34 primer (mil-spec) but it is for the Mil-Spec 168 gr bullet (from Widener's).

I have some 147 gr data, too, but it's on another computer I don't have access to right now.

So, basically, I got nothin' for ya.

http://masterpostemple.bravepages.com/M1load.htm

Recommended .30 caliber M1 loadings from the NRA

147 - 155 grain FMJ or HPBT bullets

IMR 3031 - 48.0 grains
IMR 4895 - 49.0 grains
IMR 4064 - 50.0 grains
W748 - 48.0 grains
AA2460 - 49.0 grains
AA2520 - 51.0 grains
AA2495 - 50.5 grains
H4895 - 49.0 grains
BLC-2 - 49.0 grains
H335 - 49.0 grains
RL-12 - 48.0 grains

These loads only duplicate military spec. velocities for the given bullet weight, using commercial cases and powders. If you are using military cases, drop all charges by 2 grains

Derek45, Thanks.

I know H-4895 and IMR-4895 are pretty close but I never and nobody else should assume anything when it comes to hand loading.

Thanks for the information. Now I have a reference to work off of.

I'll start at around 46 and work up.

How does it work exactly? Is it manual or automatically adjustable? Reason I ask, if it's manual, could you by chance adjust it to overgas with "commercial ammo" by setting it incorrectly? (not that any respectable person reading this forum would use that)

That is one reason I never wanted to play with it... Not that I really have an urge anyway...

Just leave it around 46.0 grains and you'll be fine. No need to work up. When I first started shooting high-power and DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship) the old timers that mentored me said 46.0 grains worked with 150's, 168's and was a maximum powder charge when loading 173 grain military match fmj's. That was considered a standard M1 Garand match load in the early 1980's.

Hornady's 155 grain bullet data shows these powders listed at a  maximum around 46.0 grains of H4895/IMR-4895 but that is more a function of the gas system than of chamber pressure. I always suggest people try 45.0, 45.5 and 46.0 grains of either 4895 when loading 168 grain bullets. This will almost always produce a good load if your Garand is capable of it.

Generally max is going to be 1 grain higher with IMR instead of H.  Since H4895 is slightly faster than the IMR version it is safe to substitute IMR-4895 for H, but not the other way.

Your gun your rules, but I wouldn't put shit in my Garand that wasn't published data in a manual.

no adjustment, just screw it in, it's a little different from the original. Will try it out later this month.

Thanks for the belp guys. 46gr IMR-4895 with the Sierra 150gr BTSP works just fine.
