Anyone an expert on tuning these?
I got the universal hand primer so I didn't have to rely on the press (mangles every other primer) or the and press (cause I'm not an exercise fanatic) It seems incredible fickle on how much I have remove the crimp from my brass (308 in this case) that hasn't been an issue at all with the lee hand press and primer setup. When it does seat it sits proud of the base a fraction, to the point they wobble, if I back the seater out a bit it will seat it where I want but it gets out of center and starts mangling primer. I am I just bad luck or should i find some teeny tiny washers to bump it up and keep it centered, or is a priest required? |

Pictures would help a lot.
Before you blame the tool did you try a reamer? Both Hornady and RCBS make great military primer pocket reamers. Also make absolutely sure you are using the right sized primer seating rod. gets out of center and starts mangling primer |

If it won't go in without grabbing the case the crimp isn't out. Quoted:

Are you seating CCI's? They seem to give the most trouble for some. You might try another brand just for a check see. For me, if the uniformer goes in, even CCI's work fine. I use mostly CCI's in my Pro 2000 progressive.
I swage with an RCBS bench swager, but with CCI's I also just touch the pockets with the RCBS Military pocket reamer to just barely chamfer the edge. That does two things for me. It helps center the primers going in, and it makes an obvious mark on the heads that tells me I've swaged. Otherwise it's very difficult to tell swaged from unswaged, at least for me. Are you using a swager? or just the Hornady reamer? the reamer should work fine if it goes deep enough. Dryflash3 is an expert on that particular tool. On the Universal, make sure your cases are all the way in each time. |

Yes, I am an expert on this; and I know exactly how to fine-tune an RCBS handheld priming tool. Here's the secret: The Only Way To Hand Prime! I'm very serious! I reloaded ammo for more than 35 years; and I never had a complaint about the Lee handheld priming tools. As for the RCBS tool? I sent mine back to RCBS for a full refund. (They just copied it from Lee; and, in my considered opinion, never got their, 'improved design' quite right.)
NOTE: You just got this from someone who ran one of the huge old RCBS Rockchucker presses (not the new lightweight model) for more than a quarter century, and owes a real debt of gratitude to RCBS Technical Support - They helped me out of many a reloading quandary; and, during this time, I even became friendly with the renowned Allan Jones whom I always enjoyed talking to! |
